After the 2016 season, the Buffaloes will have just two scholarshiped quarterbacks on the roster. A prep signee with the 2017 class will help add some depth, but Colorado might also add a transfer at the position.
Contra Costa College quarterback Cameron Burston is one transfer possibility the Buffs are looking at.
A three-star prospect that signed with San Jose State coming out of Hayward (Calif.) Stellar Prep, Burston had to go the Junior College route due to academics. This time around, he has offers from San Jose State and Hawaii, and he is hearing from Colorado, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Utah and Colorado State, among others.
“Colorado came by and told me they are interested. We have been keeping in contact with each other,” said Burston. “I have gotten to learn about their coaching style and the offense they run there at Colorado, and I think Colorado is a good school. Colorado is most definitely in the conversation.”
Co-offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach Brian Lindgren has been in contact with Burston the most from Colorado's staff. The Buffs will be guest coaching at a satellite camp at Contra Costa College in June so they will be able to talk with him again in person then.
Burston grew up cheering for Oregon, so he hopes to hear from the Ducks in the future. Overall, though, he is open with his recruitment.
“I am just trying to be patient this time around. In high school I just jumped on the first offer without exploring and seeing who else would come in,” Burston said. “I am getting older and wiser so I am better prepared, I feel like, to find the best situation. I just want to take it slower and trust the Junior College process."
After leading the Contra Costa College offense again in 2016, Burston will have three years to play two at his next stop. He is not sure yet if he will be ready to transfer next winter, or if he will have to wait until next summer.
Burston is listed by some as a dual-threat quarterback and by others as a pro-style quarterback. How does he view himself?
“I see myself as a pocket passer with the ability to run,” he said. “I can do the standard three-step, the standard five-step. I can go under-center or work out of the shotgun. So I am versatile. I have good awareness and a good energy. I love the game.”
Burston was named all-conference after throwing more than 30 touchdown passes as a freshman. And at the team's football banquet on Thursday, he was named team MVP.
“I have put in countless hours of work and had countless people doubt me. I just use that as motivation,” he said. “I have a great supporting cast in my mom, my dad, my family, along with my C.C. (Contra Costa) brothers, that help me stay focused.”
