August Football Camp continues and as the season gets closer to the Rocky Mountain Showdown against Colorado State on September 2nd, CUSportsNation.com will continue a new weekly feature: The 3-2-1. We'll breakdown three things we learned that week, two questions we have, and give one prediction.
Three Things We Learned From The Scrimmage
1. Really liked what we saw from the offensive line during Colorado's short scrimmage on Saturday. If the Rocky Mountain Showdown was this weekend: The projected starting five offensive linemen would be: Offensive Tackle Jeromy Irwin, Offensive Guard Gerrard Kough, Center Alex Kelley, Offensive Guard Tim Lynott who is only a RS-Freshman, and Offensive Tackle Sam Kronshage. This unit really impressed on the day, throw in Senior Tight End Sean Irwin, the Buffs should be able to not only protect Sefo Liufau at quarterback, but create holes downfield for Running Back Phillip Lindsay.
2. Speaking of Phillip Lindsay and the Running Backs. Lindsay really shined during the scrimmage and there were a few runs of his that showed his high level speed and cutting ability, looked like a big time running back at times. Junior Running Back Donovan Lee didn't play as much as expected and though he did get reps, it was Sophomore Kyle Evans who was playing like it was the last game of his life, great motor, making plays, tons of energy on the field. Dino Gordon a RS-Freshman who is currently suspended from playing in actual games, did get a few reps on offense and though he was tough to bring down, he looked out of shape. It was reiterated on Saturday that losing Patrick Carr by way of transferring will affect the Buffs' depth at running back.
3. The defensive secondary again impressed and though Ryan Moeller didn't play in the secondary nursing a small un-disclosed injury, it's clear that this is the Buffs' top defensive unit. Ahkello Witherspoon made an interception of Liufau, Tedric Thompson looked solid as usual, and two defensive backs that really impressed were Junior Afolabi Laguda and Sophomore Nick Fisher. Laguda displayed his big hitting ability and Fisher looked capable of holding his own should he be called on during game situations.
Two Questions
1. Is RS-Freshman Steven Montez ready to be in-trusted with the offense should he be called on this year? Liufau is the clear cut No. 1 going into the season, but if there is a game situation where Montez is thrown into PAC 12 level play, can he contribute in 2016?
2. Where in the world is Jaleel Awini going to play? The 6-foot-2, 215 pound senior has played all over the field and didn't play during the scrimmage. Some say he could play quarterback in a Wildcat type package, he played receiver in the spring game, and played on the defensive side of the ball last year.
One Prediction
1. True Freshman Anthony Julmisse gets plenty of PT during the 2016 season. Julmisse continues to ball out in August.
