As a prep star at Rancho Verde High School in Moreno, Calif., Jones was ranked as the nation's 10th best dual-threat quarterback recruit and the 40th best prospect in California from the 2014 class. He signed with Tennessee over other offers from Akron, Arizona State, Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Indiana, Maryland, Nebraska and Texas Tech.

Jones is expected to enroll at Colorado next week. That will allow him to participate in spring practices, which are scheduled to begin after national signing day in February. Jones will have to sit out the 2016 season due to transfer rules and he will then have three years of eligibility remaining to compete with the Buffaloes beginning in 2017.

Jones took an unofficial visit to Boulder in February of 2014, early during his recruitment.

"They really showed me a good time," Jones told BuffStampede.com after that visit. "It was amazing. When I say everything was perfect, I mean everything was perfect. ... And they have the mountains up there that look great, the stadium is great. We went to meet the players and they were great. I basically went up there and asked them different questions. I was basically pitching myself to them while they were showing me around."

After throwing for more than 2,000 yards with 24 passing touchdowns as a senior at Rancho Verde, Jones was selected to play in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl. He was named Inland Valley League Co-MVP and first-team all-CIF as a high school junior.

"I am good at reading coverages," Jones told BuffStampede.com as a prep prospect. "Even though I am a dual-threat quarterback, I am looking up-field first. I am not just looking to make one read and then I am off and running. That is not what I am about. What I am about is getting the ball to my playmakers and letting them make plays."

Jones will join sophomore-to-be Cade Apsay and redshirt freshman Steven Montez as the scholarshiped underclassmen quarterbacks on the Buffs' roster. Colorado also has a verbal commitment from 2016 quarterback recruit Sam Noyer, who hails from Oregon.
