Q&A: Winfree will arrive in Boulder this summer with big aspirations

For weeks, Juwann Winfree was silent about his recruitment. But after signing with CU on Wednesday, the four-star wide receiver recruit from Coffeyville (Kan.) Community College breathed a big sigh of relief and was then happy to answer questions.

What went into your decision to sign with the Buffaloes?

Juwann Winfree: “It was a hard decision for me but on my visit to Colorado, I felt it was a place you would want to live after football. That was big for me. It is so nice there. Everything there was great from the people to the food. I was comfortable there. Even though it is far from my home (New Jersey), I still felt like I was at home when I was in Colorado.”

You mentioned this was a hard decision for you. At one point you were committed to Pittsburgh... when you began the recruiting process for the second time at Coffeyville Community College, could you have imagined it would have been such a roller-coaster ride?

“(Laughing) No, I didn't imagine it would be like that. But to be signed with Colorado, I feel a lot of relief right now. It is just another step in my journey. I have been working hard to reach my goals and dreams.”

I heard former Texas Tech quarterback Davis Webb reached out to you after he announced his intention to transfer to Colorado?

“Yeah, he did. I had heard of him before so having him hitting me up was big. He was just preaching to me the impact we could have together in the Pac-12. He is a good quarterback and I am a good receiver so we can make a lot of plays together.”

Colorado loses its top receiver Nelson Spruce to graduation... do you see a great opportunity at Colorado to go in and compete for a prominent role in the Buffaloes' offense?

“Oh yeah, I definitely do. I did my research on these colleges and I know their offense has a lot of potential. Having a big role at a place like Colorado is what I have been dreaming about doing, so seeing what Nelson [Spruce] accomplished there just pushes me and makes me want to live up to some of the things he did there.”

When will you arrive in Boulder?

“May 31st for the first summer school session.”

For Buffaloes fans that didn't get a chance to see you play at Maryland or Coffeyville Community College, what can you tell them about yourself and what you will bring to the table as a receiver at Colorado?

“Just know that I can be that go-to receiver, expect big plays from me. Anywhere on the field, punt return, kick return, receiver screens, I can do it all. I bring a lot to the table.”
