On recruiting tough, physical players

"The cupboards are not bare here," Tucker said. "There’s an element of toughness on our roster right now and we’re going to promote that. That’s going to be paramount to what we do: toughness, relentless attitude, playing physical on both sides of the ball and special teams. We’re going to be violent. I feel like we already have that on our team and we’re just going to add to it."

On needs recruiting for the February signing period

"We’re looking for the best football players, the guys that can fit in what we’re going to do here, how we’re going to play football. Physical, fast, relentless, smart, tough, best conditioned – if that’s a defensive back, if it’s a linebacker, D-line, O-line, quarterback – we’re looking to fill the class with those type of guys."

On battling for recruits

"My philosophy in recruiting is, let’s focus on what we have to offer. Let’s sell our program. Let’s talk about our university, Boulder and the great tradition that we have here, all of our great coaches and our great locker room, our great facilities and the kids we have on our team right now. Obviously, we’re going to have to fight for guys, but we’re willing to fight anybody for any player at any time. If you want to get the best players, you’re going to have to fight for them."

On if he's had time to sleep since taking the CU job

“No. I sleep fast. It’s not about sleep. I became really good friends with Jim Brown, the Hall of Fame running back, when I was coaching for the Cleveland Browns. He told me he did not exhale until he retired. So I’m not looking to exhale or get a breather any time soon."

On signing eight lineman in the early period

"You always need big guys. Always. You never want to be short on big guys. That can become a huge problem for you."

On if he expects any signees to play right away

"I told all of these guys to be ready to play as a freshman. That’s your mindset. They’ll get what they earn. I believe in playing guys when they’re ready to play, whether it’s a freshman, a grad transfer or a juco guy, it doesn’t matter. We’re going to put the best players on the field."
