Kary Kutsch discusses how he became a Colorado commit

Colorado added a very late addition to their football recruiting class of 2018 on Thursday.

Oroville (Calif.) Butte Community College head coach Rob Snelling announced on Twitter that his rising sophomore offensive lineman Kary Kutsch committed to Colorado, which was a shock.

No one really knew much about Kutsch other than the schools recruiting him. The 6-foot-5, 300-pounder didn't have the opportunities he wanted to go to a four-year college out of high school, so he went the junior college route to get more schools to notice him.

Kutsch was a full-qualifier out of high school and didn't need to stay two years at Butte. After his freshman season, he was able to get recruited and go to a four-year school or could stay at Butte for another season.

Kutsch started spring practices, planning to play at Butte for another season, but then colleges started noticing him.

"Kent State and UAB started talking to me a little bit, but then all of the sudden, Colorado came to our practice and then next thing I knew, I was visiting Colorado and getting offers," Kutsch told CUSportsNation.com.

This past weekend, Kutsch took an official visit to Colorado, but it was a quiet one as media outlets went unaware of it. It took him a few days to come to a final decision to commit to the Buffaloes.

"I grew up being as USC fan, so the Pac-12 was always the hometown big conference," he said. "They said I'd have the chance to start right away, so I couldn't have done any better as far as situationally."

Kent State and Indiana also offered him a scholarship, and several other schools were interested in him and were likely going to follow suit with offers, such as Louisville, Washington, Oregon State, and Cal, but Kutsch pulled the trigger on the CU commitment.

While on campus for his official visit, Kutsch met with several of the CU coaches.

"I thought they were awesome," said Kutsch. "I liked the strength coach [Drew Wilson] a lot. Coach Adams is a cool dude. Coach MacIntyre seemed real serious about getting things done. They were solid at every position."

Kutsch will enroll at Colorado in a few weeks as a sophomore with a redshirt year available.

"I didn't really sink in until my coach posted something about it, and then I got 40 new followers on twitter," said Kutsch. "It was a lot all at once. It was crazy. I'm real excited to see how a real Pac-12 school does it. It's going to be exciting."
