After reports surfaced Saturday afternoon that Miami Dolphins WRs coach Karl Dorrell had emerged as the frontrunner to land the vacant Colorado head coaching position, those initial reports have been corroborated.

Pending official confirmation from the University of Colorado, Dorrell indeed appears to have agreed to be CU's next coach.

Dorrell, 56, will be the 27th head football coach in Colorado football program history.

Dorrell's hiring ends a 10-day coaching search by Buffaloes athletic director Rick George and associate athletic director Lance Carl initiated by the abrupt departure of Mel Tucker on Feb. 12.

During that period, Darrin Chiaverini had served as the Buffs' interim head coach. Chiaverini's future is of particular interest; Dorrell was offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Colorado from 1995-98, for the entirety of Chiaverini's college career at CU, where he was a WR.

Dorrell inherits a Colorado team currently without position coaches for the inside linebackers, defensive line and offensive line. Additionally, he'll need to hire an offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach.

From 1992-93, Dorrell was the Buffaloes' WRs coach. He played wide receiver at UCLA from 1983-86, winning three Rose Bowls with the Bruins in the process.

His coaching beginnings started in 1989, when he coached wideouts at Central Florida in 1989. Dorrell has coached at Arizona State (1994) as well as Washington (1999), both overseeing the wideout corps. At UW, Dorrell additionally served as offensive coordinator.

He joined the Denver Broncos in 2000, coaching wide receivers through 2002. In the NFL, he has also coached with the Houston Texans, New York Jets and Miami Dolphins, where he comes to Boulder from, having coached the Dolphins' WRs in 2019.

The Denver Channel's Troy Renck reported earlier today Dorrell's contractual parameters — again, which have yet to be announced or confirmed by CU.

Renck cited sources who informed him Colorado was "prepared to pay its next coach in the five-year, $19 million range."
