Huffman-Dixon talks committing to CU, Ty Evans, other schools, and more

Two weeks ago, Colorado landed their highest ranked commit in two years with Braedin Huffman-Dixon choosing Colorado over the likes of Georgia, Nebraska, Oregon, and others.

Huffman-Dixon, who ranks as the No. 159 overall recruit in the country, went in-depth with CUSportsNation.com about his decision to commit to the Buffaloes and what the reaction was to that pledge.

To start, his family backed his decision with full support.

"My parents were happy about it," Huffman-Dixon said. "They actually wanted me to commit the day we went out there [a couple weeks ago]. Everyone else in my family was proud of me. I actually have some family in Colorado too. Everyone agreed with my decision; it's a good fit for me."

The four-star receiver first informed Darrin Chiaverini of his decision but wanted to reflect on going public with his pledge.

"I told coach Chev, and he was really excited," Huffman-Dixon said. "We talked a little bit about it before I left [my visit] and then I told him it would probably be that week, but I needed time to think about it on my own. I ended up texting him and told him that I was ready and it just went from there."

Huffman-Dixon got back from his CU official visit on April 29 and announced his commitment on May 1. What was going on in his head during that two day span?

"I was just thinking if I was ready personally for the commitment," he explained. "And I had to think 'What about this school, what about that school?' Those were the first things that came to my head. I took a step back and thought about it. It really came down to just making that decision for me. I don't know about other recruits, but the big fear for me was 'what about other schools?' That clouded my head with some negative thoughts, so I took a step back and did it for me."

And now that he's a CU commit, Huffman-Dixon is talking with fellow 2019 commits and 2018 signees regularly.

"Ty Evans, the quarterback commit, reached out to me. We were talking about ten minutes before I posted it. Daniel Arias reached out to me too and we talked for a little bit. I'm in a group chat [with the other 2019 commits] now. They're great guys."

In January, Colorado landed their quarterback commit for the 2019 class in Ty Evans from Palmer Ridge H.S. Huffman-Dixon offered up a memorable quote about his future quarterback.

"I watched his film, and I was just like 'This guy... He has some nice touch. Oh gosh. His arm is woo!' That boy can sling it. Watching his film brought light to me -- I'm in a great passing offense in a great passing defensive conference at a great school, the offensive coordinator is my position coach, and there's a great quarterback in my class that can throw the ball. They're loaded up at quarterback. It's unbelievable how many quarterbacks they have. They all can throw and run. It's unbelievable."

Cornerback recruit K.J. Trujillo also officially visited Colorado the same weekend as Huffman-Dixon, and there was a discussion between the good friends to announce their commitments to the Buffaloes at the same time.

That didn't happen, but Trujillo ended up committing to CU a day after Huffman-Dixon did.

"I've known him for a few years now," he said of Trujillo. "I got to know him a lot better this year because we play on the same 7v7 team -- Premium. So when we went out there [to Colorado] we were talking about when we were going to commit. We came together and talked about how we were going to do it. We were both just excited."

After Huffman-Dixon committed to Colorado, he heard from some schools who had different reactions to his decision.

"Purdue was more of the 'Hey man, what happened?' And then ASU, was more of 'Congrats, we're still going to be on you.'"

Huffman-Dixon plans to visit more schools in this once in a lifetime opportunity as a recruit, but he doesn't have anything set up at the moment.

"I am going to take some more visits and coach Chev understands it," he said. "He knows where we stand, so he's not really worried about anything else."
