Deion Sanders spoke to the media on Tuesday after the Buffs made the return from their bye week, looking to flush away their double overtime collapse against Stanford. After that debacle, Sanders had said that Colorado “had no choice but to move forward, that’s life,” and his comments on Tuesday reflected that. This week, the Buffs turn their attention to another top-25 conference opponent when they head to Pasadena to take on No. 23 UCLA.
Here are five takeaways from the Buffs head coach’s time with the media on Tuesday.
The Buffs’ penalty woes could be coming to an end
One of the biggest stories of this season at CU, and one of the biggest areas that the team has struggled, is the penalty department. The Buffs currently rank 128th in the nation in penalty yards per game and are tied for the most total penalties in college football.
The penalty issue came to a head during the Buffs' loss to Stanford, where they were whistled for a whopping 17 penalties, costing them 127 yards in total.
“We have addressed all of that and have addressed the individuals who are consistently getting penalized,” Sanders said. “We have addressed it tremendously, and you should see a tremendous improvement this Saturday.”
Many of the Buffs’ penalties have come after the whistle, in the form of personal fouls or unsportsmanlike conduct fouls, leading some to question the team’s discipline, but Sanders says that doesn’t start between the lines.
