Cumber giving Colorado a long look

Christian Cumber's lockdown ability was on display early during his junior season at Denver (Colo.) Mullen when opposing teams shied away from him.

“I actually had to move to safety so that I could get more involved in the game. Because when I was at cornerback, they would just avoid my side of the field,” said Christian Cumber. “It shows the respect they were giving me but it was a little frustrating because I was trying to work on my corner skills. I was still able to get good work in at safety.”

The Buffaloes identified Cumber as a top priority for the 2017 class when he was still as a sophomore. Cumber has taken multiple unofficial visits up to Colorado in the last couple years, with his most recent trip to Boulder taking place last Sunday.

“The facilities look incredible. They're brand new and they are great. I enjoyed seeing it because I hadn't seen the finished product yet,” Cumber said when asked about his time with the Buffs last weekend. “I talked to their coaches a lot about the recruiting process, what they are looking for in a recruit and what I am looking for in a school. They really want the best Colorado players to come there to help make the program good again."

“I am not exactly sure yet when I am going to do it, but I am looking forward to going back up for an academic day at CU," he added. "I'll shadow one of the players and really get to see what a day in their life is like up there. So that should be a good experience.”

Colorado State and Nevada have also extended an offer to Cumber. He is hearing from North Carolina, Minnesota, Nebraska, Washington, UCLA and Arizona, as well.

“So far I am planning to visit Nevada and CSU, also,” he said. “But other than that, I haven't planned any visits yet.”

As far as making a decision, Cumber said, “I am just trying to wait a little longer.”

A 6-foot-0, 180-pounder with good hips and speed, Cumber believes he could factor in at either cornerback or nickel back in college.

“I think I would be pretty good at nickel back because I would be able to blitz the quarterback,” he said. “That is a new dynamic for a defense, having a defensive back that is able to cause the offense some trouble.”

Cumber will be compete in the Pylon 7-on-7 tournament in Las Vegas with his Weapon X teammates this weekend. He is also participating in track and field this spring, running in the 100-meter dash, 200, 110-meter hurdles, and the 4x1 and 4x2 relays.

“In the 100, I am really hoping to run below 11 because my personal best last year was 11.07-seconds,” he said. “I feel like I can get it down into the 10.8s this year for sure.”
