Colorado faced one of the top teams in the country at home against Washington on September 23 and got smoked, and the Buffaloes dropped a close 27-23 road contest to the UCLA Bruins on Saturday night.
The Buffs sit at 3-2 this season and are in need of a bounceback victory. Luckily, CU hosts a very beatable Arizona football team this Saturday in the friendly confines of Folsom Field.
For Colorado to get back in the win column, they need to take the "next step."
"It’s just about taking that next step," star cornerback Isaiah Oliver said. "It starts with fixing mistakes, we had way too many penalties today, way too many coverages busted and things like that. So we’re going to fix that this week and come out strong and get ready to play Arizona."
"The biggest thing is we got to work on the little things that are coming up on film," added defensive end Leo Jackson. "As you said having a stop, those one or two yards that make the critical difference we need. We need those yards, we need to find out a way to make those plays."
Buffaloes' quarterback Steven Montez left everything on the field as he might have played his best game of the season. While he didn't complete over 50% of his passes, he threw 243 yards, zero interceptions, and led all rushers with 108 yards on 15 carries.
"I thought there were a lot of plays out there that could have gone our way," Montez said. "Obviously they didn’t. We need to get back to practice on Monday and just use this as motivation. If this doesn’t fire you up, I don’t know what will. I thought that we played a good game. We’ve just got to finish."
Expect a salty Colorado squad that will be ready to pounce on the Wildcats.
"We will be ready to go come Saturday," Oliver stated.
Buffs squander opportunities in frustrating loss to UCLA
Final Score: UCLA 27, Colorado 23.
KEY MOMENT
Is there any question? Trailing 14-10 late in the second quarter, the Buffs lined up at the UCLA 11 for a very makeable 28-yard field goal. But CU ran a fake and flipped the ball sideways to placekicker James Stefanou. The ball fell to the ground incomplete. It is unlikely he would have made the first down anyway since a Bruins player was in his face when he tried to catch the ball. As a result, the Buffs trailed by 4 points at halftime instead of a single point. The play loomed larger and larger as the second half proceeded. When the game ended, it haunted Colorado.
