Chase Newman has not visited Colorado since last summer, but the three-star prospect from La Mirada (Calif.) High continued to think about the Buffs as he picked up other offers this spring. And on Sunday, Father's Day, Newman had some good news for CU.

"I actually just talked to [head] coach [Mike] Mac[Intyre] and I committed," said the 6-foot-1.5, 210-pound Newman. "He seemed pretty excited, and so was my family.

"What sold me was I believe there is something special going on there. I personally believe there will be great things happening there in the future. And I love the outdoors, which Colorado is great for. It is a great fit for me academically and football wise."

A key member on a La Mirada defense that gave up just 15.7 points per game en route to a state championship in 2015, Newman will factor in at linebacker or safety at CU.

"They said we'll figure out my position when I go out there and practice. They liked me for my athleticism and how I see the field pretty well," he said. "I would like to gain more weight but maintain my quickness so hopefully I become a bigger, quick athlete."

Newman also received offers from Air Force, Colorado State, Fresno State, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon State, Washington State and Wyoming. Arizona and Cal were interested.

Former Buff quarterback Mike Moschetti coaches Newman at La Mirada, where the Buffaloes have also targeted tight end Sire Woods, Elijah Hicks and Tyler Casados.

"Coach Moschetti was very excited when I told him I am going to Colorado," Newman said. "He tried to stay out of the decision making process but he did tell me he thought it would be a great fit for me. I realized during the process Colorado is the place to be."

A first-team all-Southeast Division selection last year, Newman recorded 77 tackles, 10 tackles for a loss, nine hurries, two interceptions, two defensive touchdowns and one sack as a junior. He spent time playing both outside linebacker and safety.
