As a high school recruit in the class of 2016, Shane Gatling played for Niagara University, a Division I school in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. He scored 4.7 points per game during the 2016-17 season in 33 games played.

Gatling transferred to Indian Hills C.C. in Ottumwa, Iowa, where he exploded. He averaged 16.6 points per game on 43% shooting from the field and 39% from beyond the arc. Gatling also shot an incredible 85% from the free throw line.

Gatling led Indian Hills to a 33-0 start to the season before losing in the NCJAA playoffs. He was named a first-team All-American by the National Junior College Athletic Association. Per Indian Hills, Gatling earlier was named the Iowa Community College Athletic Conference Division I Player of the Year and was a first-team all-region selection after helping Indian Hills win the league regular-season and post-season conference titles.

The 6-foot-2, 170-pound guard, who can play both point and shooting guard at the next level, committed to the Colorado Buffaloes on Sunday, he announced on Twitter.

The Buffaloes needed a guard to help the Buffs' depth, especially someone to come in and be able to back up McKinley Wright at the point.

Gatling showcases a very quick release with legitimate NBA range. He has capable handles and can shoot off the bounce or off the catch.
