6'2'' 'too sexy' nose tackle Javier Edwards is ready to work at Colorado

BOULDER— When you look on the field it’s common to see big men anchoring down the trenches, but this next season when you peer down and take a look at the defensive line, one player will stick out. When asked about his weight, this specific player told CUSportsNation a very unusual answer, rather than blatantly saying his weight right away, he called himself "too sexy”.

That big man on the field is 6’2’’ ("too sexy") 369-pounder Javier Edwards, a junior college transfer from Blinn College in Texas. Edwards has been the big man on campus since January and is easily adjusting to Boulder.

“It’s been good, I can’t complain. Everything is going smoothly,” said Edwards. “Coming from JUCO, things are going to be a little different so you just have to get into the swing of things.”

At 369 lbs, Edwards is no doubt the biggest body on the team, but before the season starts the coaches want him to slim down 19 lbs and since January Edwards has already started to notice a big difference in his strength.

“I’m getting bigger, stronger, faster, slimming down, they are just bringing the best out of me,” Edwards said.

“In addition to gaining strength, Edwards believe his greatest talents lie in his size and athleticism."

“My biggest strength is my strength, that I’m big and strong and I’m pretty hard to move,” Edwards said.

Hard to move is an understatement when you look at Edwards, but that is what the Buffs are going to need this year on the defensive line after losing Josh Tupou.

When Edwards decided on Colorado, he wanted a school where he could come in and get in shape. Drew Wilson has definitely helped Edwards achieve that, and the entire coaching staff has the same message for him.

“You got to work, if you want it, you got to work,” Edwards said when asked what the coaches have been telling him since he's been here.

When it comes to starting next season, Edwards has one simple message for Buff fans.

“Definitely,” Edwards said on making a difference next season.

One adjustment for Edwards has been the switch to a 3-4 defense. Right now, he's just working to understand D.J. Eliot and Mike MacIntyre's defense.

“In JUCO I was moving a lot, slanting and doing a lot of stunts and now I’m actually just playing big, it’s not too hard, it’s an easy adjustment,” Edwards said.

“They are swimming a little bit but they show good athletic ability, which is what you want to see. That’s why it’s great to have them here during spring practice, cause they can get all this is and then be able to go all summer, and when we start back in fall camp is when I should see them make a big jump. Spring will be a little bit new for them, they are having to learn everything and do it all,” Coach MacIntyre said when asked about the JUCO transfers.

Colorado got lucky when they flipped Edwards from Arkansas on junior college signing day, and the transfer nose tackle is primed to make a huge difference on the defensive line this season.
