Colorado's losing streak is up to three, as the Buffs were unable to do much of anything on the road in Pullman Saturday evening with Washington State cruising to a 41-10 victory. Below are 10 takeaways from the game.
1. Steven Montez is playing the worst football of his college career
***Over his last two games, Montez is 35-of-64 (55%) with six picks, zero touchdowns and 260 yards. I don't even think there's an argument to be had — Montez is in the middle of a patch of play that ranks as the worst in his collegiate career. Both of his INTs were the result of poor decision-making.
A moment that defined his day was an incomplete pass intended for K.D. Nixon late in the second quarter. Montez threw the ball at his feet, Nixon reacted in a "dude, are you kidding me?" kind of way, and the cameras zoomed in on Montez who smiled in what appeared to be utter disbelief and disappointment.
From there, cameras stayed on him as he got on the phone and began talking presumable to Jay Johnson while apparently responding to some heckling by fans in a less-than-polite way.
These are the kinds of performances as a senior that take you right out of NFL consideration.
2. The broadcast booth was spot-on in diagnosing Montez's mishaps / critiquing him.
***I think a lot of the time, broadcasters during nationally televised games can get things wrong and/or paint a picture about a team/someone that is inaccurate or at least indicative of not regularly covering that person or team.
But tonight ESPN's crew was right on the money in talking about Montez. A lot of instances featuring flawed decision-making, bad footwork, bad balls — all things that are just befuddling to see from a fifth-year QB.
For the second straight game Montez has been unable to shake off mistakes and turn himself around. Much was said during the broadcast about Montez not playing with confidence as the game progressed. That sure seemed to be accurate.
3. Redzone playcalling continues to be befuddling
***Nothing more epitomized this to me than a 2nd and 10 wildcat rush by Laviska Shenault that preceded Montez's pick in the endzone during the second quarter. The previous four plays had been rushes by Alex Fontenot and Jaren Mangham that moved the ball a total of 37 yards.
Colorado's leaving the redzone consistently without points is becoming a regular occurrence and is crippling the team.
Another case in point example was the drive that led to James Stefanou's 24-yard field goal, making the score 14-3 in favor of Wazzu. The Buffs had a 1st and 10 from WSU's 10-yard line and passed three straight times, with one completion and three yards gained to show for it.
It should be noted that Montez had Dimitri Stanley open in the flats for what would have likely been the score but threw a pretty off pass resulting in an incompletion.
4. Alex Fontenot got the ball 11 times. That number should have been doubled. At least.
***If there was one positive about how the offense performed, it was due to Fontenot, who finished with 11 carries for 105 yards. He consistently gave Colorado positive yardage plays and had multiple solid-distanced rushes throughout the game.
His lack of touches, particularly in the redzone, is my largest complaint with the game called by Johnson. I think with how bad Montez was playing, Fontenot should have been given the ball until WSU's defense forced some variety.
There was one thing working consistently for the offense, Fontenot's ground game, and it wasn't utilized nearly enough.
5. The defense played as expected
***This game presented Colorado's defense with the most unfavorable WR to DB matchup it'll have to face the whole year. I'm not declaring 41 points and 497 yards allowed a moral victory, not by any means, but the Buffs got a turnover, forced four punts and held the nation's leading passer to almost 100 yards under his weekly average.
The point here is that despite giving up big plays, despite Max Borghi having a field day, given the situation at hand for a young defense dealing with injuries and mismatches gave close to a bend but break performance...
