Who Has The Edge: Colorado or Colorado State

Who Has The Edge: Colorado or Colorado State?

Yes, another breakdown of the upcoming Rocky Mountain Showdown, what else is there to talk about? However, today we take a different angle by pairing up the two teams side by side entering the 2016 match up to see who has the true edge going in.

Position: Head Coach

Colorado: Mike MacIntyre | Colorado State: Mike Bobo

Breakdown: Mike MacIntyre (Colorado) is 10-27, Mike Bobo (Colorado State) is 7-6. MacIntyre and Bobo both have ties to the State of Georgia. MacIntyre graduated from Georgia Tech, Bobo coached 14 seasons at Georgia. MacIntyre is 1-0 against Bobo, but Bobo took CSU to a Bowl game in 2015. MacIntyre feeling more pressure going in as the Buffs have lost their last 8 of 9, Colorado State on the other hand has won their last 4 out of 5 games entering 2016.

Edge: Draw

Why: Simply put they each need this game badly, more pressure on MacIntyre

Position: Offensive Coordinator

Colorado: Brian Lindgren/Darrin Chiaverini | Colorado State: Will Friend

Breakdown: Brian Lindgren/Darrin Chiaverini are co-offensive coordinators at Colorado, Will Friend is in his second season at Colorado State. As a sole offensive coordinator in 2015 Lindgren's offense put up 24.6 points per game, which was 97th in the nation. Chiaverini a graduate from Colorado is in his first year coaching back at his alma mater. For Friend, his first year was very productive as the Rams averaged 29.6 points per game and racked up 425-yards per game.

Edge: Colorado State

Why: Who knows how the dual offensive coordinator deal will work, especially on opening night. Will Friend had a successful year in 2015 and he has some big hitters returning into 2016.

Position: Defensive Coordinator

Colorado: Jim Leavitt | Colorado State: Marty English

Breakdown: Jim Leavitt is in his second year as the Defensive Coordinator at Colorado coming to the Buffs from the 49ers where he was the linebackers' coach. Colorado's defense allowed 27.5 points per game and 198.7-yards per game which was 99th in the country. The Buffs' passing defense allowed just 218.2-yards per game, which ranked 59th nationally. The Defensive Coordinator at Colorado State is Marty English who is in his 5th year at Colorado State. English was the linebacking coach in 2015, but was the co-defensive coordinator for the Rams from 2012-2014 under then Head Coach Jim McElwain.

Edge: Colorado

Why: Jim Leavitt has more experience and quite frankly, has a better defense returning. If this game is going to come down to one area, it's right here. Jim Leavitt vs. Will Friend...

Position: Quarterbacks

Colorado: Sefo Liufau | Colorado State: Nick Stevens or Faton Bauta

Breakdown: Fans at Friday Night's game or who are watching on ESPN should be in for a treat as each Colorado and Colorado State return veteran quarterbacks that can make the big play. Colorado returns Senior Sefo Liufau who threw for 2,418-yards and 9 touchdowns, for Colorado State it will likely be Junior Nick Stevens who threw for 2,679-yards and 21 touchdowns. With that said, Colorado State has not named the starter for the 2016 Rocky Mountain Showdown as Faton Bauta who is a senior transfer from Georgia is pushing Stevens for the starting position.

Edge: Colorado

Why: Sefo is the man for the Buffs. Colorado State is still a question mark at the position, not really want you want just days away from the kickoff.

Position: Running Back

Colorado: Phillip Lindsay | Colorado State: Dalyn Dawkins

Breakdown: Lindsay led the Buffs in rushing last year with 653-yards off 140 carries, scoring 6 touchdowns. He has looked very explosive during August Camp. For Colorado State, Dawkins is their big time playmaker who had an impressive showing against Colorado last year. After practice on Monday, Coach MacIntyre had nothing but positives to say about Dawkins.

Edge: Colorado State

Why: Dawkins did work last year during this match up rushing for 118-yards and 1 touchdown, he's a home-run hitter.

Position: Receivers

Colorado: Shay Fields, Bryce Bobo | Colorado State: Olabisi Johnson, Sammie Long

Breakdown: Both Colorado as well as Colorado State need players to rise up Friday Night as each lost some big time players. Colorado will look to Shay Fields who hauled in 598-yards and look for a player like Bryce Bobo or Devin Ross at the slot to step up as well. The Rams have liked Olabisi Johnson during August Camp, Sammie Long is also listed as a No. 1, and Xavier Williams is a name to know on the outside.

Edge: Colorado

Why: The Buffs return much more experience at the position: Fields, Bobo, and Ross caught for a combined 1,129-yards. Colorado State's leading receiver heading into 2016 is Running Back Dalyn Dawkins who caught for 178-yards.

Offensive Line

Colorado: Alex Kelley, Jeromy Irwin | Colorado State: Fred Zerblis, Nick Callender

Breakdown: During Colorado's Tuesday Press Conference Mike MacIntyre said that the Rams pushed their defensive front around in their last meeting. For the Rams watch for Fred Zerblis is a 6-foot-2, 305 pound offensive guard, Nick Callender is a 6-foot-6, 325 pound left tackle. Jake Bennett at 6-foot-3, 290 returns at center, and 6-foot-5, 290 pound Zach Golditch is at right tackle. Colorado State's Offensive Line averages: 303 pounds. Colorado returns two starting linemen from the 2015 season with 6-foot-2, 305 pound Alex Kelley at center and 6-foot-4, 295 pound Gerrard Kough at guard. The great news is that Jeromy Irwin at 6-foot-5, 295 pounds is back from a knee injury and watch for rising right guard Tim Lynott at 6-foot-3, 300 pounds. Colorado's offensive line averages: 298 pounds.

Edge: Colorado State

Why: With 4 out of their 5 starters returning into the 2016 season, Colorado State looks to have the edge between the two teams.

Defensive Line

Colorado: Jordan Carrell, Josh Tupou | Colorado State: Josh Lovingwood, Jakob Buys

Breakdown: Really like what Colorado returns into the 2016 season inside the trenches on defense. The return of both Josh Tupou at 6-foot-3, 325 pounds at Defensive Tackle as well as the return of Samson Kafovalu at Defensive End, along with Jordan Carrell at 6-foot-3, 300 pounds makes the Buffs front three very capable of creating problems for really anyone they face. Colorado State returns 6-foot-4, 310 pound Josh Lovingood at Defensive Tackle, 6-foot-4, 265 pound Jakob Buys is another junior to watch, and Darnell Thompson at 6-foot-4, 270 pounds will also be a first year starter.

Edge: Colorado

Why: The Buffs much more experience within the defensive line, stopping guys like Tupou, Carrell, and Kafovalu is going to be tough. The Colorado State Offensive Line vs. the Colorado Defensive Line is going to be a tremendous battle.

Linebackers

Colorado: Derek McCartney, Addison Gillam | Colorado State: Kevin Davis, Josh Watson

Breakdown: Again, Colorado returns much more experience than Colorado State in this area. McCartney recorded 70 total tackles, Jimmie Gilbert led the team with 6 quarterback sacks, Olugbode recorded 80 tackles, and Rick Gamboa led the team in tackles with 96. Throw in Addison Gillam who is back from a knee injury, the Buffs have tons of experience. Colorado State will be without Deonte Clyburn who they lost to a season ending injury during fall camp, but they do return Kevin Davis, the 6-foot-2, 240 pound weak side backer recorded 101 tackles last season, 13 alone during against Boise State. Watch for Tre Thomas at 6-foot-2, 215 pounds and 6-foot-2, 235 pound Josh Watson who saw plenty of time as a Freshman last year.

Edge: Colorado

Why: Outside of Kevin Davis returning for Colorado State, most of the Rams are new to the scene. Colorado's has much more of an edge in terms of experience and you could argue that McCartney will be the best linebacker on the field Friday Night.

Defensive Backs

Colorado: Chidobe Awuzie, Tedric Thompson | Colorado State: Tyree Simmons, Jordon Vaden

Breakdown: Don't be surprised, Colorado again has much more experience in the secondary department, those that follow Colorado 24/7 know that this is their best overall unit because of ballers like: Chidobe Awuzie at either Nickel or Corner and Tedric Thompson at the safety position. Throw in guys like Isaiah Oliver, Ahkello Witherspoon, and Ryan Moeller, and Afolabi Laguda, the unit is among the PAC 12's best. For Colorado State, Tyree Simmons returns and watch for Jordon Vaden who was a receiver last year, we keep hearing great things about his playmaking ability, but this is his first year on defense.

Edge: Colorado

Why: This is Colorado's best unit returning 4 starters into the 2016 season, Colorado State returns just one starter in Tyree Simmons.

Special Teams

Colorado: Diego Gonzalez, Alex Kinney | Colorado State: Wyatt Bryan, Hayden Hunt

Breakdown: Diego Gonzalez hit the game winner last year against CSU, but he was just 62.1% on the season. Colorado also returns their punter from last season in Alex Kinney who had an average of 40.12, 6 of his 66 punts went for over 50-yards. Colorado State also returns their kicker and punter from last season. Wyatt Bryan was 16-22 kicking field goals last year, which was a 72.7 percentage, with two being blocked, one by Tedric Thompson in 2015. Hayden Hunt had an average punt of 46.0, 15 of his 52 punts went for over 50-yards. Colorado State Running Back Dalyn Dawkins will return kicks, Robert Ruiz will return punts. For Colorado Running Back Phillip Lindsay will return kickoffs and receiver Jay MacIntyre will return punts.

Edge: Colorado State

Why: On paper, Colorado State has a better kicker and a better punter, but last year Colorado won the special teams game, which eventually led to the overtime victory.

10 To Stop From Colorado State

1. Nick Stevens, Quarterback, 6-foot-2, 220 Pounds, SeniorAlthough Colorado State hasn't named their starting quarterback yet, Stevens would be the best option for them and will most likely get the call. Last year Stevens was named Mountain West Second Team Conference and started all 13 games for the Rams. Stevens completed 211-of-347 (60.8%) passes for 2,679 yards and 21 touchdowns. Stevens has experience at QB and has been in Mike Bobo's system now for a year. He understands what Bobo wants from him and he gets the job done.

2. Dayln Dawkins, Running Back, 5-foot-9, 175 Pounds, Junior

Dawkins is a good back for Colorado State, he's a powerful runner and his quickness gave Colorado a run for their money last year. In the 2015 Rocky Mountain Showdown, Dawkins had a 42 yard run against the Buffs which contributed to his total of 118 rushing yards, along with 59 receiving yards on six receptions. He's a tough back to bring down and will exploit Colorado defense if they can't stop the run.

3. Kevin Davis, Linebacker, 6-foot-2, 240 Pounds, Senior

The Rams are only retuning one starter on defense this year and that guy would be Kevin Davis. Davis is a Colorado kid who earned All-Mountain West honorable mention honors, he started all 13 games for the Rams at linebacker. He's got a nose for the ball and makes big tackles. Last season he lead the team in tackles with 101, including 3 sacks. He's a senior and a leader on this Ram defense and he will find the ball wherever it is at come Friday night.

4. Hayden Hunt, Punter, 6-foot-0, 220 Pounds, Junior

Hunt is a great punter for Colorado State, he only had one touchback last season on 52 punts, averaging 46.0 yards, which was fifth-best in FBS. Last season he was named one of three finalists for the prestigious Ray Guy Award, an award for the best punter in college football. He's a weapon for Colorado State and he won't make it easy for Jay Macintyre to return any of his punts Friday night.

5. Josh Watson, Linebacker, 6-foot-2, 235 Pounds, Sophomore

Watson a redshirt sophomore is going to be a big part of Colorado State’s defense at the middle linebacker position. He played in 11 games last year including the Rocky Mountain Showdown where he had six stops. He recored a season high nine tackles against Savannah State last year with three of the tackles being for a loss. He is going to be an important player for Colorado State’s defense especially during the run.

6. Olabisi Johnson, Receiver, 6-foot-0, 190 Pounds, Sophomore

After losing Rashard Higgins to the NFL, the Rams are going to have to turn to another wide receiver to make big plays and that guy should be Johnson. He appeared in all 13 games last season earning one start against Air Force. As a true freshmen last season Johnson recored two catches for 15 yards and a touchdown in his college debut. He should be the main target this year for Stevens at the wideout position.

7. Josh Lovingood, Defensive Tackle, 6-foot-4, 290 Pounds, Junior

As a sophomore last season Lovingood played in 11 games with seven starts, he had 15 tackles, four for loses and a fumble recovery. He is a big defensive lineman at 310 pounds and is going to be key for the Rams in stopping the Buffs run. Colorado's offensive linemen need to be prepared for Lovingood because his size and technique could allow him to cause havoc in the backfield.

8. Tyree Simmons, Corner, 5-foot-11, 190 Pounds, Senior

At right cornerback Simmons played in 12 games and started seven last season recording 38 tackles (30 solo), one interception and eight pass breakups and also had two forced fumbles. He’s a smaller corner at 5’11’’ but will give Shay Fields and Bryce Bobo some trouble on the outside. In 2014 against San Jose State he recored a career high 10 tackles.

#9. Jake Bennett, Center, 6-foot-3, 290 Pounds, Junior

Colorado State has a good group of guys on their offensive line this year and Bennet will be a big part of that at center. He started all 13 games last season at both center and left guard. He helped block for an offense that was very successful: first downs (23.15 per game, 33rd nationally) and red-zone offense (87 percent, 44th). Him and Stevens are going to have some chemistry after playing with each other for most of their career. Josh Tupou is really going to need to get after Bennett and the rest of the offensive line so they can get to the quarterback.

10. Nick Callender, Offensive Tackle, 6-foot-6, 325 Pounds, Senior

Callender a redshirt senior started nine games last season at left tackle and is in charge of protecting Stevens’ blindside. He’s a big offensive lineman at 325 and will make it hard for guys like Jimmie Gilbert and Derek McCartney to get around him. Last season he blocked for Stevens as he threw for a career high 310 yards against Nevada.

Key Quotes From Colorado's Tuesday Press Conference

Mike MacIntyre:

"We're excited about this game, all the depth charts finally came out yesterday. I was kind of looking at it, I've been hearing about how young CSU is, they have 16 seniors on the two deep, we have 16 seniors. We have six freshmen in our two deep, they have four freshmen in the two deep. I'm not buying that they're not a good football team."

"I think they are one of the best offensive lines we played last year, I think they will be one of the best offensive lines we play this year, the way they work together, their run schemes. They are an excellent football team."

"All those kids that played two years are going into their third year and they were better and they were bigger and they've playing against a lot of good football teams. Number two we got more pass rush, we had more sacks, thats the key."

"They all got to work together, I think that they will do that again."

"Coach Bobo is an excellent head coach, been an unbelievable offensive coordinator for a long time, he's going to do what he does and the young man that came in from Georgia knows his system. So I don't think the system will change that much, we just got to be able to stop them. My personal opinion I think they'll play Nick Stevens that's just me but I don't know."

"We'll be ready for whatever they do and we got stop them, whoever walks out there."

"I'm excited he's back and he's looked good out at practice, I'm looking forward to him having a year, that he's earned to have," Coach Mac on Sefo's first game back.

"I think that with our fan base and their fan base if you go out to eat anywhere, or you go do something they are going to have watch parties. It's a game that last 365 days a year. The excitement of that and it being an instate rivalry game makes it very exciting and it's something that is talked about all the time."

"They see that heighten intensity, they see that understanding, when they see other people overcome things and the work ethic and the time they have to put into it, basically if you know your friends and hopes and dreams and you can help him reach his hopes and dreams, you're going to do a little bit more and thats what I see Sefo has done with this team."

Sefo Liufau:

"They definitely made a lot of strides, I saw it starting from spring, going against them in fall camp you can definitely see a difference in terms of athleticism, coverage indicators, they do a lot of good things as a defense especially the secondary."

"Just don't get in the way of ourselves, I think last year a lot of times in all three phases we kind of hurt ourselves in different ways. Whenever you want to be a great team you have to limit your mistakes especially self inflicted ones."

"To me its just another game, you know it doesn't really matter who we lineup against in week one, it's just another game to me. It's not to distract anyone, whoever you put in front of me I'm gonna go out there and play my best and treat each game like its a championship game. Each week you want to go 1-0 and do your best against whoever you lineup against."

"Bryce has definitely stepped up, since Juwann got injured which was an unfortunate event, but Bobo has definitely stepped up in the mid to later part of camp when Juwann went down. He took the majority of the reps after that. He's done a lot of great things."

"It's also my senior year, it's also the realization that theres only so many snaps left in college football for me and you never know when you or anyone else could get hurt again. There's definitely an heighten sense of focus for me and definitely holding people more accountable on offense because I realized how good we can be all across the board."

"At times we were in tight situations, most of the time it was when we were down by a couple points, I think I tired to get it all back at once which can get you into trouble a lot. It's a realization to myself that you don't have to do it all and that you have playmakers around you."

Jimmie Gilbert:

"This year it's starting the season off right, starting the season off on a winning note and getting the ball rolling. It's bragging rights for the people that live here. For us seniors its the last first game we get and we gotta come out with a win."

"Yes and no. The reason I say no, is we go week by week, so every week is our rivalry week for us. We try to give each of our opponents respect and if you respect your opponent, you learn about your opponent, you game plan against your opponent and thats just what we're going right now."

"If we're gonna win we have to stop the run and last year we did not tackle well enough so thats been a real big emphasis these past few weeks. Tackling, stopping the run, setting edges, things we need to do to make them throw the ball and when we get them to throw the ball thats when the D-line starts to come in and get the sacks they need, the pressure they need to cause turnovers."

"The handwork we put in, the strides that the younger guys have made, the experience we have at inside backer, D-line and safety, the experience we have on the offensive line and the running backs, the quarterbacks as well as the receivers. We have a lot of experience, we have a lot of energy, we have a lot of talent and this year is our year to showcase that."

"It's really important to me that we get to where we need to be so we can get those goals that we've set out since day one. Since Coach Mac has been here, since the team has been here, so it's very important."

Five Burning Questions Going Into The CSU Game

1. How Will The Co-Offensive Coordinator System Work?

This will be the first year Brian Lindgren and Darrin Chiaverini share a Co-Offensive Coordinator Title. What will be the outcome, which coach will do a majority of the play-calling, and it will be intriguing to see how their on the field chemistry coincides, especially in key tight game situations. There is not only a lot riding on game one against in-state rival Colorado State to win pressure wise, this game will also feature Colorado's new spread offensive attack which could take Colorado a quarter or two to really find a game rhythm. Last year against Colorado State, the Buffs trailed 14-0 before outscoring the Rams 24-10 in the final two quarters before the game went into OT. The Buffs racked up 220-yards passing, 125-yards rushing, committed no turnovers, trailed possession wise 36:43 to 23:17, and were a dismal 3 of 13 on third down efficiency.

2. How Will Liufau, Irwin, Adkins II, Gillam, and Awini Hold Up?

Colorado returns a ton of veteran experience all over the field, but they also return a lot of guys who were injured last season or who have been injury plagued career wise. This will be Colorado Quarterback Sefo Liufau's first full game back since November 13th when he suffered a Lisfranc injury and though he's been solid through August Camp, he still has not played a full game on his foot. This Friday Night will also be the first full game that Offensive TackleJeromy Irwin has played in since September 12th of 2015 after he tore his ACL. Running BackMichael Adkins II continues to deal with hamstring issues and this will be his first game back since the 2015 Colorado State game, not sure how much time he'll see as he was listed No. 4 on the depth chart at the position. Star Colorado Linebacker Addison Gillam will also be on the field for the first time since the UMass game in 2015 after suffering a knee injury. Though he has looked good during August Camp, we're not quite sure if he is 100%. Gillam recorded 119 tackles in 2013 and 79 tackles in 2014. One of the biggest question marks is Jaleel Awini. What position will he play, will he play, etc. He did not suit up for the Colorado scrimmage held in early August and he was recently listed as injured on Colorado's August 27th published depth chart.

3. Is The Colorado Defensive Secondary Really That Good?

We've talked about the Colorado Secondary all summer, everyone has. Rightfully so with two of the PAC 12's best returning in Cornerback Chidobe Awuzie and Safety Tedric Thompsonreturn. Last year during the Rocky Mountain Showdown, these two came up big: Awuzie sprung a block that allowed Linebacker Kenneth Olugbode to return an interception 60-yards for a touchdown and Thompson blocked a 27-yard field goal in overtime. As mentioned yesterday in our Colorado Secondary Report, the Buffs have additional playmakers in the secondary such as Sophomore Isaiah Oliver, Senior Ahkello Witherspoon, and safeties Ryan Moeller, along with Afolabi Laguda. Last year, Colorado State Quarterback Nick Stevens who returns this year completed 25 passes for 282-yards, and one touchdown.

4. Who will step up at the receiver position?

Colorado graduated Nelson Spruce who is now playing for the LA Rams, last year Spruce hauled in 1,053-yards and 4 touchdowns. The Buffs recently lost JC Transfer Juwann Winfree to an ACL injury, Winfree looked to come in and be that big play target for Liufau. So the question heading into Friday Night's Game is: Who will step up on the outside for the Buffs?Shay Fields is your likely candidate as he caught 42 balls last year for 598-yards and 4 touchdowns, also look for Junior Bryce Bobo to step up at the X position, and at the slot Devin Ross returns, he caught for 324-yards in 2015. Also keep tabs on JC Transfer Kabion Entowho has looked dependable this summer along with Freshman Johnny Huntley.

5. Will Colorado Rise Up On National TV In Week 1?

No way to spin it: Colorado should win this game this Friday. The Buffs have more of a foundation under now 4th Year Head Coach Mike MacIntyre, they return more starters on both sides of the football, the equalizer is: It's a rivalry game on National TV to open the season. The last 10 meetings between these two teams has gone either way, the last team to win two in a row was Colorado who beat Colorado State in 2010 and in 2011. Like every game, it comes down to execution, a little bit of luck, and momentum. Something Colorado has a ton of entering the 2016 season.

Biggest Defensive Impact Players To Watch This Weekend

1. Chidobe Awuzie - Defensive Back

The heart and the soul of the defense is clearly Awuzie and a big play or a big hit from him early on in the game would be polarizing for not only the Buffs’ defense, but for the thousands of Buffs fans in attendance. Last year against Colorado State Awuzie played in 88 plays, recorded 6 tackles, and 2 pass deflections. It’s cliche, but big time players rise up in big time games…

2. Josh Topou - Defensive Tackle

Last year against Colorado, Colorado State Quarterback Nick Stevens was 25-39 passing for 282-yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions. Neither Colorado or Colorado State came up with a quarterback sack in the game, clearly getting heat on Stevens is key and while Topou while likely draw double teams, he needs to have a full 4 quarters of drawing double teams to allow the Buffs’ defensive line unit or the backers to get to Stevens.

3. Samson Kafovalu - Defensive End

Kafovalu is another dominating linemen that needs to have big game and here is why. With Buff Defensive Tackle Josh Topou drawing double teams and the offensive coordinator for Colorado State Will Friend trying to figure out ways to get in or around Topou, this will create plenty of opportunities for Kafovalu to either get to the quarterback or focus on stopping the run. There is no reason that Kafovalu should not be amped up to get back on the field and make an instant impact.

Film Room: Breaking Down CSU's Offense

A little bit of film room review from last year's Rocky Mountain Showdown. We know how Colorado State jumped up two scores, but let's take a closer look into how they scored those two touchdowns to open the game.

This is just a very well executed play by Colorado State. There are multiple blocks on this play that contributed to the touchdown run. Notice the Left tackle gets up field and gets to the backer, the Right Guard pushes the DT out of the way, the fullback takes out the defensive end, the center seals off the insider linebacker, the official is right in the way of the safety, making it easy for the running back to get into the next level to score untouched.

During the Rams’ second touchdown the play action pass does freeze the linebackers for a brief second, but it’s not an NFL type play action. The reason they scored here was because it was a great ball thrown by Stevens, good route by the receiver, and the receiver does this stutter step around the 10-yard line which crosses up the DB. The defensive back is out of position, right around the 5-yard line he looks way off balance, the receiver adjusts to the ball and then has enough presence of mind to turnaround into the end-zone.
