McCaffrey updates recruitment

It's well documented that the McCaffrey family is pretty good at the game of football. There's no arguing that and you probably already know about Max, Christian, Dylan, and of course the father, Ed McCaffrey.

But the youngest of the brothers is Luke McCaffrey, who is a very talented athlete in his own right. Is he the most talented football player in the family though?

"I'd like to think so, but there's a long debate over that," McCaffrey said with a laugh.

The 2019 prospect is over double digit offers with the likes of Colorado, Nebraska, Michigan, Mississippi, and Ohio State in the fold.

McCaffrey noted that Virginia, Nebraska, and North Carolina have been recruiting him especially hard lately, and the Tar Heels are getting close to offering him. He hopes to visit both schools.

"I know a couple of schools that I want to go and visit are Virginia and North Carolina," McCaffrey said. "Maybe Oregon, I've talked to them a little bit. Other than that, I'm just looking to where to go visit this summer and maybe have a decision by the beginning of the fall, or if I have to, after that. Just whenever it feels right."

Valor Christian H.S. has been loaded with quarterback talent over the past few years, with Luke's brother Dylan leading the team from 2014-2016 and Colorado quarterback signee Blake Stenstrom quarterbacking Valor last season.

In 2016, Luke was the team's leading receiver with 47 receptions for 717 yards and nine touchdowns, bursting on the scene as a very talented athlete who could play wide receiver at the next level.

But make no mistake about it -- Luke plays quarterback too and wants to play that position in college. As a junior last season, he completed 54-of-71 attempts for 878 yards and six touchdowns as Stenstrom's backup (but also started a couple of games when Stenstrom had an injury). McCaffrey also ran for 548 yards and nine touchdowns on just 80 carries.

He played a little bit of receiver last year too, catching 19 passes for 147 yards and a touchdown.

"I want to play quarterback. No question about it," McCaffrey said. "Most of the recent schools have been offering me at quarterback. There are a few schools that have offered me as a receiver, and some that aren't sure and want to see my senior season -- see if I can really play quarterback."

Colorado has missed out on all of the McCaffrey brothers to this point and that may continue. The Buffs are recrutiing McCaffrey as a wide receiver, which makes sense since they have their 2019 quarterback committed in Ty Evans.

"They're active in my recruitment. They're one of those schools that's recruitment as a receiver, so it's a little tricky, but they talk to me. I was there last fall for their Washington game," he said.

McCaffrey has formed a relationship with offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach Darrin Chiaverini.

"Yeah, he's awesome," McCaffrey said. "His kid went to Valor too -- Curtis. I really got to know them throughout that whole process."
