Buffaloes likely to add JUCO safety

Kyle Trego turned down an offer from Air Force out of high school. And after a stellar freshman season at Diablo Valley College, the California native turned down an offer from Eastern Michigan.

“I declined those offers because I know I can compete at a higher level and I felt like I could get a Pac-12 offer,” said Trego, a 5-foot-11.5, 190-pound safety. “After last season, my coach and I both thought I could get a better offer if I stayed another semester.”

It appears Trego's gamble will end up paying off. Colorado started showing interest in him roughly a week-and-a-half ago and he is scheduled to take an official visit to Boulder this coming weekend.

San Diego State, Cal Poly and UTSA are some other colleges that have shown interest in Trego in recent weeks. If the Buffaloes extend an offer this weekend, what are the chances he will commit?

“I am going to say the chances are very high. It is hard to beat a Pac-12 program” Trego said. “I know they have a nice culture at the school and new facilities. I just want to see if I have good chemistry with the coaches and players out there. I am hoping to see and meet a lot of motivated athletes when I go out there.”

A full qualifier out of Liberty Union High School in Brentwood, Trego would have four years to play three with the Buffaloes if he ends up transferring to Colorado this summer.

He was a unanimous first-team all-conference selection as a freshman at Diabo Valley College. He was also the runner-up for his conference's defensive player of the year award and he was a first-team all-state selection.

“I am really good at reading linemen, whether it is a pass or a run. I trigger quick,” Trego said. “I see tendencies in offenses so I have been told I have good football IQ. And my tackling is probably my greatest strength.”

Colorado only has one scholarshiped underclassman safety on its roster for spring practices, and no safeties from the Class of 2016 have signed with the Buffs yet. Trego would add some much needed depth at the position. And Trego believes he can be more than just a depth piece.

“I think I could make a big impact because I am an impact player. I have the film to show it,” he said. “I am a very nice guy so no one at Colorado would hate me if I go there. I hustle, and everyone likes a hustler, so I think they are going to like me out there.

“It would be nice to finally settle down with a team and know I am going to be there for three or four years. It would be nice to actually have a college that I can call a home versus being at a Junior College where you know it is not a long-term situation.”
