Wright makes a decision
Charles Wright.Vanderbilt continued its recruiting haul on Sunday with the commitment of Irvine (Calif.) hybrid linebacker
The 6-foot-4, 225-pound prospect was committed to San Jose State but chose to flip his choice following an offer and official visit to Nashville over the weekend.
VandySports.com broke the news on Sunday afternoon and Wright soon confirmed the decision via Twitter and Instagram.
"Possibly one of the hardest decisions of my life. But through lots of prayer and conversation with my parents, I've decommitted from San Jose State and committed to Vanderbilt." - Wright stated around 3 p.m. on Sunday.
A standout from Arnold Beckman High in Irvine, Wright's initial connection with Vanderbilt stemmed from the move of former Spartans defensive coordinator Kenwick Thompson to Vanderbilt as the Commodores new outside linebackers coach under Derek Mason.
Wright was later evaluated and visited by new Commodore defensive coordinator David Kotulski, who also scouted him while at Stanford, earlier last week. A prototypical 3-4 linebacker, Kotulski soon offered Wright in effort to create more depth along the Commodores front seven.
As a senior, Wright posted 74 tackles with eight sacks and 13 tackles for loss. A two-way athlete, Wright is also one of the top players on Beckman's basketball team. Wright registered 77 total tackles with four sacks and 8.5 tackles for loss in 2012.
An Pacific Coast All-League performer, Wright received other offers during the process from New Mexico, New Mexico State, Fresno State, Wyoming, UTEP and a few others. He also received attention from Oregon State, Stanford and Washington.
He joins fellow California prospect Hawkins Mann as a future linebacker in the Commodores new defensive scheme. Vanderbilt is expected add at least one more hybrid defensive end/linebacker by National Signing Day on Wednesday.
