VIDEO: Goff spins it at Cal showcase

BERKELEY -- Every year, without fail, at the California football program's one-day showcase camp, that cycle's quarterback commit gets to sidle up next to head coach Jeff Tedford and lean the art of quarterbacking. Sunday was no exception.

Newly-minted four-star prospect Jared Goff, who jumped six spots in the latest prospect rankings to the No. 15 pro-style QB in the country, got to sling it with his future head coach during positional drills, and was by far the most impressive signal-caller at the event held on Witter Rugby Field.

"That was great," Goff smiled. "Growing up, watching him coach on the field, from the stands, to being where I am now - committed - throwing next to him and him giving me little tips and advice was just awesome," said Goff, who just a day earlier was celebrating an North Coast Section baseball title with his Kentfield (Calif.) Marin Catholic teammates.

Goff finally came away from the O.co Coliseum with a section title after falling to Campolindo 20-18 in December. That doesn't mean he's satisfied, though.

"I'm one-and-one from there," Goff smiled. "I actually played pretty well. I went 2-for-3 with a double, a single and an RBI. I think I scored twice. We played really well, and it was a lot of fun. It was great to get out of there with a win. Football starts tomorrow. Summer ball. It starts tomorrow morning, 6 AM. Right back at it."

Sunday, though, was all about the gridiron, as Goff stood next to his future head coach during the camp, and then went right into recruiting mode as soon as the event ended.

"I think everyone had a great day today," Goff said. "With the weather and just everything that was going on -- a lot of fast-paced stuff -- everyone seemed to love it. We had a lot of fun out there. Obviously, Elijah [Qualls] had a lot of fun. He's really excited now. I told him I liked the Cal hat."

Qualls came away impressed with several other prospects at the camp, including Na'im McGee.

"He looked really good," Goff said. "Receivers, [newly-offered] X'avier Shepherd, I really liked him. He looked good. The tight end [Ray Hudson], he looked good. I threw to him a bunch of times. Big kid. He looked fast, had good hands, soft hands. Obviously, Chad Whitener was out here, the new commit we got. He looked good. He did a good job out here."
