BURLESON - The Burleson Elks (5-2, 3-1) have flown under the radar in the District 7-4A race, but the Elks got their biggest win in the short two year tenure of HC Jason Tucker as they stunned the Everman Bulldogs (4-2, 3-1) on Friday night. The hero was WR Aaron McCarley who caught a 34 yard touchdown pass from Barrett Cain as time expired to send Burleson Stadium into a frenzy with a 28-23 win. Everman appeared to be in position to run the clock out with under a minute left in Burleson territory, but instead of punting the ball Everman went for it on 4th and 5 at the Burleson 37. Burleson came up with the defensive stop and scored in two plays with no timeouts in just sixteen seconds for the miraculous win. Injuries and off the field issues once again plagued Everman as sophomore RB Terrence Cook did not play due to disciplinary issues, backup RB Zach Cowan did not play as he sat out his third consecutive game with an injury. DE Jacob Kennedy left the game in the first quarter with an injury as well.

Burleson opened the game up with a 12 play 83 yard drive that took up over six minutes off the clock, the drive was capped on a 17 yard run by senior quarterback Barrett Cain. The PAT was no good and Burleson led just 6-0. Burleson added to the lead right before halftime as Latham Liggett nailed a 23 yard field goal making it 9-0 Burleson at the half.

Everman would get on the board for the first time midway through the third on a four yard run by Devynn Birdow, the score was set up by a partially blocked punt by Everman's Landon Jones. After a Burleson three and out, Everman would take their first lead of the night on a 72 yard scoring strike from Birdow to Horace Richardson. Birdow would add the two point run on the swinging gate play to make the score 15-9 Everman.

Burleson would take the lead back with 10:30 remaining in the game as Cain scored for the second time from a yard out making the score 16-15 BHS. The lead would be short lived as Richardson scored from 54 yards out on the first play of the ensuing possession to put Everman back on top, Richardson would add the two point run to make it 23-16 Everman with 10:07 left in the game. Cain would get his third touchdown run of the game with 6:11 remaining to cut the lead to 23-22. Burleson elected to go for two after the score but the Everman defense would stop Cain for a loss for the lead to remain at one.

Burleson would attempt an onside kick with three minutes remaining, but the kick bounced out of bounds. Everman was unable to kill the clock off as Birdow on third and long would throw an interception. The Bulldogs defense would hold Burleson on downs to set up the fateful final sequence.

Everman will try and pick themselves up off the mat next week as they host 7-4A leader Mansfield Summit, while Burleson will visit Arlington Seguin.
