Cheeks closing in on a decision
Marques Cheeks played his junior campaign in the 240-245 pound range. But heading into his senior season, the defensive end has spent all summer focused on his weight in order to add to his physical game along the line.New Orleans (La.) native and O. Perry Walker High School's
"Some schools are looking at me as a defensive end and as a defensive tackle," said Cheeks. "So I wanted to add more muscle this offseason and add more weight. I am now up to 271-pounds so I feel good about that. I also focused on improving my speed and my forty time and I have also improved there, too."
Cheeks noted he owns offers from Mississippi State, Minnesota, Kansas State and Florida International. Here lately, he has taken a couple of visits and has one more on his plate this week.
"I went to Florida International for a visit and then I went to LSU's camp," said Cheeks. "I have also been to Mississippi State's camp and then I am going back to Mississippi State this week for their Big Dawg Camp."
And of his camp stops, Cheeks said the most competitive experience he faced was in Starkville.
"I have been to several camps this summer but I thought Mississippi State's camp was the best," said Cheeks. "I say that because of the competition and top-ranked guys they had there. And facing that kind of competition only makes you better and that's what you want in summer camps."
Since his initial MSU camp visit, Cheeks said he has remained in touch with the MSU coaches. He added the Bulldogs are still his front runner and that he may be close to making his collegiate decision.
"Things are still going great with Mississippi State," said Cheeks. "Coach (Greg) Knox and Coach (Dan) Mullen send me a lot of letters and I connect well with their coaches. I have thought about committing soon and might do that at that camp. Their camp will be my last one this summer so I am getting closer to making a decision."
