Big Commitment

South Carolina now has commitment number eleven of the 2012 recruiting class, and it comes in the form of a big in-state pledge.

Dillon (SC) wide receiver Kwinton Smith, who projects to ultimately land as a four-star prospect in Rivals.com's rankings, pledged to the Gamecocks on Wednesday over offers from a host of major college football programs.

Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU, NC State, Notre Dame, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest all offered the 6-foot-4, 206-pounder.

Smith told GamecockCentral.com that he was ready to put an end to his recruitment before his senior season.

"The process got to be too much for me and I wanted to go ahead and get it over with," he said. "I felt like South Carolina was the best fit for me at the time. It's close to home, I have a bunch of friends that go there and my family can see me play."

The big wideout informed the South Carolina coaching staff of his decision during an unofficial visit to the school on Wednesday. They were happy to hear of the decision and one member of the staff talked with Smith about the rest of the receiver recruiting class.

"He (Steve Spurrier, Jr.) told me the receivers he wanted to get, and he said he's on track to get them the way it looks right now."

Carolina's coaches have big plans for Smith, and he is preparing himself to step in and make an impact.

"They're talking about having me fill the role of Alshon Jeffery," he said. "I know that's going to be big and I'll have to work hard to do it, so I'm trying to get ready for it."

The Pee Dee product credited Carolina's staff with doing an excellent job recruiting him.

"They did a great job. I mean, they let me know how important I was for them and the role they want me to play in the offense and on the team. They made me feel at home and I had chemistry with them. We're really close right now."

Smith camped in Columbia and earned an offer from South Carolina's coaching staff last month. Also a standout baseball player, he has spoken with USC's staff about playing that sport at the next level as well. He attended the recent national championship celebration at Colonial Life Arena.

With the decision behind him, the future four-star pass-catcher is excited about the next few years in Columbia.

"We want to do things that haven't been done in school history yet. I'm looking forward to it."
