Thompson adding offers
D.J. Thompson picked up a verbal offer from Southern Miss. But over the last couple of weeks, the 6-foot-4 and 195-pound receiver/defensive back has picked up a couple of more in-state offers.Early on in his recruitment, Pearl, Miss., junior
"I got a verbal offer from Mississippi State about a week after spring break and then Ole Miss offered not long after that," said Thompson. "I thought both offers are real good opportunities. Most schools are talking about receiver with me but Southern Miss is recruiting me as an athlete, either as a receiver or a safety.
"I actually like receiver because I think it is my best fit and I feel I am more of an offensive player. Playing safety is fun and I like hitting people and releasing some anger on defense. But I have a lot of fun at receiver, too."
Thompson also noted other schools are starting to show interest of late.
"As far as showing me the most interest, I would say it's Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Southern Miss and Alabama, too," said Thompson. "I am also starting to get a lot of letters from Tennessee and Arkansas and those schools are giving me good reviews through my coaches. Louisiana-Lafayette is also talking to me and wants me to come to their junior day."
Thompson has yet to attend any junior days but said he was hoping to visit the in-state programs in the near future and possibly Alabama, too.
But for now, his slate is already pretty busy this spring.
"We just started track and I am doing the long jump and high jump," said Thompson. "I wasn't going to do it at first because I was working out in basketball and football, too. I was just going to do the normal things and work on my speed and strength for football. But it's been good going out for track again and I like it."
And back to his recruitment, Thompson said he is keeping everyone on an even playing field for now until he gets to see more of these programs up close.
"They are all kinda the same in my opinion," said Thompson. "I am just looking at the type of offenses these teams are running. I want to play for an offense that likes to throw the ball and a place I could earn early playing time. I am also focused on academics the most and what schools can help me become successful when football is over with in my life."
