The Workout- freshmen and sophomores

ST. PETERSBURG, FLA.-As is customary at Nike Team Florida boss Tom Topping's annual "The Workout", the freshman and sophomores took the floor on Sunday. In many cases, Sunday's action at the Wildwood Community Center was our first look at a player. But, we'd sophomore wing Alain Chigha before and he more than backed up the good impression he made on us during the spring and summer.

Sunday standouts at "The Workout"

Alain Chigha, SF- The sophomore wing from Gainesville (Fla.) The Rock was probably the best player in camp on Sunday. A total warrior on the floor, he plays with great energy and is a leader. He knocked down some deep jumpers, is good off the dribble and can be quite intimidating to his peers because of his physical approach. At the end of the day he's a physical guy with plenty of high major attributes and potential to get to that level.

Richard Lee, SG- Only a freshman at Oakland Park (Fla.) Norheast, the 6-foot-2 shooting guard showed plenty of promise. He's already got a pretty well developed frame, is a fine athlete and has a nose for scoring the ball. His jumper isn't what one would call textbook, but he can create space for it with the dribble and is a very confident and accurate shooter.

Dre'Kalo Clayton, PF- He lacks a bit in the height department, but nobody can question the toughness, footwork and touch of the 6-foot-5 brawler from Orlando (Fla.) Evans. A strong kid with a big frame, he's got great feet, good quickness near the rim and makes outstanding use of the glass to finish on either side of the hoop and out to 15 feet.

Brendan Mooney, PF- After impressing last year as a freshman thanks to his high skill level, the sophomore from Alamonte Springs (Fla.) Lake Brantley had another nice outing at the Workout. Now approaching 6-foot-7, he can shoot, works hard on the glass and is a sneaky athlete and clever player. Operating out of the high post, he's an asset as a shooter or passer.

DeVaughn Jenkins, PF- A freshman at Bronson (Fla.) High, Jenkins is a very intriguing guy. At 6-foot-6 he's all arms and legs, but he moves very well and has outstanding hands. He hit a few medium range jumpers, scored in the post with jump hooks and should develop into a pretty good athlete with maturity.

Schuyler Rimmer, PF- Not only was the sophomore from Orlando (Fla.) Boone one of the more skilled kids in camp, he was one of the better competitors. He can make high post jumpers, fights on the glass and looks like he's got a great motor. Already 6-foot-7 with a nice frame, he showed plenty of promise.

Mitchell Wilbekin, PG- The younger brother of Florida freshman guard Scottie Wilbekin, the six foot high school freshman at Gainesville (Fla.) The Rock is ahead of where his big brother was at the same age. He's in control of the game and already has good quickness and ball skills. His pull-up jumper is a pretty good weapon and should serve him well as he develops.

More Sunday notables

A sophomore wing at Lakeland (Fla.) Tenoroc, 6-foot-5 wing Karlos Odum was among the event's top athletes. He flies to the rim in transition, handles the ball well enough and plays with plenty of energy. ... Gainesville (Fla.) The Rock is loaded with young talent and one of their better young players is combo guard Austin Harrell. Only a freshman, Harrell is a slender guard who is very quick to the rim and shoots just enough jumpers to keep the defense honest. ... Like most of the other guys in camp, sophomore point guard Rashawn Powell from Orlando (Fla.) Dr. Phillips is lacking in strength. But, he doesn't lack for quickness, pretty good decision making and a nice motor. ... There weren't many guys in camp with more athleticism than 6-foot-3 wing Troy Holston. The Tampa (Fla.) Freedom sophomore is a skywalker in the making who loves to attack and finish well above the rim. ... It's hard to not at least be intrigued with sophomore Davarus Clark from St. Petersburg (Fla.) Farragut. Clark is a massive young man who supports his 6-foot-8 and near 350 pound frame with size 22 shoes. He's surprisingly agile and was willing to work. ... Finally, Ian Malone will get some division one attention. The sophomore at Montverde (Fla.) Academy is a 6-foot-6 power forward with good skill, a nice looking jumper and from what we saw on Sunday, a tremendous work ethic. ...
