Rippy switches pledge

Doug Rippy, Bryce Givens and Josh Williams developed a strong bond earlier in the recruiting process when all three were verbally committed to Nebraska.

When it became apparent Bill Callahan was going to be fired as the Huskers' coach, all three decided to re-open their recruiting.

The talented threesome took an official visit to Colorado this past weekend. Rippy and Givens both decided to commit to the Buffs and it appears to be only a matter of time before Williams joins them.

"It is just a great place to be," Rippy said of Colorado. "Bryce, Josh and myself, we had a great weekend there. We all wanted to go to the same school and it looks like that's going to happen.

"The trip was better than what I expected and I just realized it was the best situation for me. My mom and my family are really excited that I am going there.

"Coach Hagan had a good relationship with one of my coaches and one of my uncles. He has been recruiting me since last year. I finally realized that was the best situation for me. I committed to Coach Hawkins and he jumped out of his chair. He was excited."

A Rivals.com three-star prospect, Rippy is ranked as the 56th best outside linebacker prospect from the Class of 2008. The Buffaloes project him to play the will linebacker position.

"The coaches at Colorado said I have an opportunity to start but I am going to have to come in and work," said Rippy, who currently stands 6-foot-2, 218-pounds. "I will have a lot of competition there with Jon [Major], Shaun [Mohler] and Lynn [Katoa] and all the other guys on their team."

Rippy earned first-team all-conference and first-team all-district honors this season as a senior.

"I just want to learn more about the game," he said when asked what he wants to improve on as a player before getting to college. "I feel like I am athletic enough to do just about anything on the football field but this was only my senior year playing the game so I still have a lot to learn."
