Prep Round-up: Quarterbacks come up big


High school football opened this weekend for most players and several future Spartans and had big games. Michigan State quarterback commitments Chris Durkin and Jayru Campbell showed why they are so highly thought of. SpartanMag.com has all the details.




Class of 2014:

  • QB Chris Durkin of Youngstown Ursuline High School in Ohio

    Durkin threw a 30-yard touchdown pass on 4th and 15 to lead Ursuline to a come from behind 27-24 win over Walsh Jesuit High School. Durkin threw for 199-yards on the night. He also rushed for a touchdown to close the gap to 24-20.


  • RB Gerald Owens of West Deptford High School in New Jersey

  • TE Matt Sokol of Rochester Adams High School in Michigan

    Plays against Clarkston High School tonight 700PM


  • OL Brian Allen of Hinsdale Central High School in Illinois

    Plays against Bolingbrook High School tonight 700PM


  • OL Chase Gianacakos of St Francis North High School

    Plays against Elk Grove High School tonight 730PM


  • DL Enoch Smith Jr. of Mt Carmel High School in Illinois

    Smith and the Mt. Carmel defense held Harrisburg High School to 6 points as the Golden Aces cruised to a 41-6 victory in their season opener.


  • DE Robert Bowers of Walnut Ridge High School in Ohio

    Bowers is sitting out the season due to having shoulder surgery. Walnut Ridge dropped a tough game to Bishop Watterson by a score of 17-12.


  • DT David Beedle of Clarkston High School

    Plays against Rochester Adams High School tonight 700PM


  • LB Deon Drake of Cass Tech High School in Michigan

    Drake is recovering from an injury and did not participate in the game against Southfield High School.


  • LB Byron Bullough of St Francis High School in Michigan

    Bullough led his team in rushing with 78-yards on 14 carries and had a strong game on defense, but it was not enough as New Lothrop prevailed 28-7. New Lothrop returns most of its key players from last year's 10-1 squad.


  • LB Chris Frey of Upper Arlington High School in Ohio

    Upper Arlington dropped its opening game to Marion Franklin by a score of 26-7. Marion-Franklin is a traditional Division 2 powerhouse team having only lost 2 regular season games the last 9-years. Frey busted a 56-yard run to set up U-A's only touchdown.


  • DB Vayante Copeland of Thurgood Marshall High School in Ohio

    Division 3 Thurgood Marshall High School made a strong statement that they will be very tough to beat this year by defeating Division 1 Northmont 32-22. Copeland led all rushers with 111 yards on 20 carries. He also picked off two passes on defense to give him 21 for his career.


  • DB Jalen Watts-Jackson of Orchard Lake Saint Mary's High School

    OLSM jumped out to an early 13-0 lead vs. a talented Oak Park squad, but was unable to hold on as they ended up losing 25-20. Oak Park used a powerful ground game led by Spartan target John Kelly (offered) who rushed for 149-yards on the night to take control of the game in the 2nd half.


  • ATH Matt Morrissey of Stevenson High School in Illinois

    In what was considered a huge upset, Indian Hills High School in Wisconsin upset Stevenson High by a score of 15-14. Stevenson, who came in ranked #2 in Division 8 (largest schools) in Illinois, turned the ball over 7 times in the loss. Morrissey had the biggest play from scrimmage for Stevenson hauling in a 37-yard pass to set up their first touchdown.

  • QB Jayru Campbell of Cass Tech High School in Michigan

    In a showdown which features a host of Division 1 recruits, Campbell led the Technicians to an 18-14 victory in the marquee game in the Prep Kickoff Classic. Campbell came up big at the end of the game completing 10 of his final 11 passes. He finished 18 of 28 passing for 203 yards and two touchdowns. Spartan 2015 running back recruit Mike Weber (offer) had a solid game for Cass Tech.
