Arizona prep ready for UW visit
While coaching staff, style of play and other factors generally attract recruits to the Wyoming football program, the state of Wyoming is playing a part in the recruitment of Phoenix offensive lineman Charlie Renfree.
The 6-foot3, 280-pound interior lineman said his time in the Phoenix metro area has been great, but he is looking for something else in the next phase of his life.
"I have been to Montana a couple times and I know Wymoing has the same type of landscape," Renfree said. "I am a big outdoors guy. I like hunting and fishing and I know Wyoming is a great place for that and not to city-like. I am sick of living in the city."
Renfree will get his first shot to see Wyoming in-person on Nov. 30 when he comes to Laramie for his official visit. Currently, the Wyoming Cowboys are one of three schools to offer Renfree a scholarship, the others being Idaho and South Dakota State.
"I really don't know much about the college itself," Renfree said when asked about his experiece with Wyoming. "I've seen some videos on youtube about the program and pictures of the campus. My dad has been there and he said it was a nice place. I don't know a lot of people who have gone there, so it will be exciting to get to go there and see what it is like. (Defensive line coach Matt) Rahl said they are only taking a couple inside guys this year and I am their top guy. They said I would have a chance to play early, which is pretty exciting.
"Hopefully when I get down there (Laramie) I will see the faciities and stuff and see what the program is all about."
Renfree said Wyoming is one of his favorites right now, along with Florida Atlantic and San Jose State. The First Team All-Stater said he recently started talking to FAU, which offered scholarships to two of his teammates this week. San Jose State was also talking to Renfree on a near-weekly basis. He said the University of Arizona also calls from time-to-time.
"The coaching staff, the location, the conference, the offensive scheme, academics and just the atmosphere are going to be important to me," Renfree said. "I'll probably make a decision in Jan. I just want to see what other schools pull the trigger and keep my options open."
Renfree said he hopes to major in either Chemistry or Management. Down the road he hopes to either open his own gym or supplament company. Qualifying academically should not be an issue for Renfree who claims an SAT score of 1740 and a grade-point average of 3.9. Just as impressive as his work in the classroom is his work in the weightroom where he boasts a squat of 475 and a bench press of 385.
Before Renfree can come to Laramie, he has some unfinished business with his high school teammates at Brophy Prep. The Broncos are 11-2 coming into Friday night's state semifinal against top-ranked Mountain Point. Brophy comes into the contest ranked fourth, but with a win this season against Mountain Point.
"It will be a tough game, but from what we see on film and in practice I think we can beat them," Renfree said Wednesday night.
