Juco OT to visit Ole Miss, Florida on final weekend
The next few days figure to be busy for Pierce Burton.
They could also give the offensive tackle from San Francisco (Calif.) City College a glimpse of home.
Burton, a 6-foot-7, 290-pounder, will visit Ole Miss and Florida over the next three days before returning home to choose his next destination, one he'll likely make home for the next two years.
"(Ole Miss) Coach (Hugh) Freeze offered me at Arkansas State," Burton said Thursday evening. "I'd been talking to (Houston) Nutt's staff at Ole Miss before. They were going to offer me. I know it's a program with a lot of tradition and that kind of thing.
"I see it as an opportunity to help their program out of a bad situation. I also see it as an opportunity to showcase myself right away."
Burton has emerged as a top priority for the Rebels, which lose three-year starter Bradley Sowell at left tackle and could lose rising senior right tackle Bobby Massie to the NFL draft.
"They're saying I have to come in and compete," Burton said. "They're telling me it's pretty much my job to compete for and keep."
Burton said he's narrowed his decision to Ole Miss, Florida, West Virginia, Indiana and Kentucky. He said he'll relax on Monday, sit down and review everything before making a decision. He could sign a national letter-of-intent as early as Wednesday.
"It'll come down to what school I can enjoy, the atmosphere, which coaching staff I connect with and where I can step in and be an impact player," Burton said.
