Parks Excited to be a Coog

The Houston Cougars continue to add pieces to their 2012 recruiting class and picked up a big commitment adding the latest piece of the puzzle in Edna (TX) speedster Devin Parks.

CougarsDen caught up with Parks to talk about his commitment and what led him to Houston.

"Houston has been recruiting me for about two years now, since I was a sophomore," the speedy athlete told CougarsDen. "I was at church when coach (Tony) Levine called me and I told him I would call him after church, then I went over to my friend Mac's (Mac Long) house and called him and told me the University of Houston was going to offer me a full ride scholarship."

Several factors played into Parks' decision including the opportunity to play with a close friend at the next level.

"I've had a lot of interest in Houston since my sophomore year," the 5-foot-10, 165-pound athlete said. "It's close to home, I have family in Houston and I have friends in that area, I know some people on the team and I know some of the guys they are recruiting."

One of those players is fellow Cougars' commit and standout offensive lineman Mac Long, who's been opening up holes for Parks all season.

"I met Mac last year and we became pretty good friends real quick, knowing that I'm going to continue to play with him is real nice because I'm comfortable with him."

Parks' commitment gives the Cougars another burner in the recruiting class, Parks ran track for Edna and was a state champion in the 100-meter dash and has been clocked as fast as 4.38 in the 40-yard dash, running track is something Parks would like to do during his time at Houston.

"My plans are to run track when I get to Houston," Parks said. "I told coach Levine that's what I wanted to do and he said that was okay with them."

The 7-3 (4-2) Edna Cowboys will open the 2011 Texas State Playoffs on Saturday when they travel to La Vernia to take on the 5-5 (3-2) Blanco Panthers. Game time is set for 6:00 p.m. CT.
