Thompson looking at three
Nick Provo is gone after this year and David Stevens is gone after next season and that leaves Syracuse with two scholarship tight ends on the roster making this class important for tight end depth. The Orange already have a verbal commitment from Joshua Parris, but there is one more fish they want to hook.
Ron Thompson, 6-foot-4, 210 pounds from Southfield (Mich.) was thought to be ready to pick Syracuse during the summer, but plans changed. The commitment plans might have changed not his thoughts on the Orange though.
"I think Syracuse is a very lovely place to be at the moment. The coaching staff that they have is really good and I think they really care about the players that they recruit up there."
A visit had not been taken yet, but it looks like he will be at Syracuse on their big visit weekend in December.
"I think I will be visiting up there after the season around like December eighth or ninth."
While on his visit he will be looking for a couple items.
"I will just be looking to see how life is for a freshman, things I can and can't do, and just overall being comfortable."
On that trip to Syracuse seeing his recruiting coach Tyrone Wheatley will also be special because the two have formed a solid bond during the process.
"My relationship with Coach Wheatley is good. I probably have the best relationship with him out of any other college coach. I feel that it is pretty good."
Many prospects talk about the history of Syracuse, the academics, or how the program is on the rise when they are asked what is the first thing that pops into their head about the school. For Thompson it is a little bit different.
"Family is the first thing I think of when it comes to Syracuse. They are a very family oriented team."
If he does end up picking Syracuse he thinks he will bring a lot to the table, but he knows he will be replacing a very solid tight end.
"I feel I could bring a lot to the tight end position even though they already have a beast of a tight end in Nick Provo. I can block as well as be a pass catching tight end."
During the summer when he was ready to pick a school it was thought that his decision was put on hold because of Indiana, but now that program is out and another one is in.
"The schools that I am hearing from the most and that I have my eye on are Syracuse, Illinois, and Cincinnati."
Again a commitment was supposed to happen over the summer, but now there is no time frame for a decision.
"I do not have any date set yet and I am just playing everything by ear."
