Rice Commit Loves to Hit

Rice's first commit of the 2012 Class was Justin Carter of Birmingham Spain Park. The hard hitting Safety from the fitting Yellow Hammer State, is part of what many think is the best high school secondary in Alabama this year. Joining Carter in the Spain Park Secondary are UAB commits Devon Brown and Destin Challenger, along with Chris Humes. All will be Division I players.

We caught up with Justin last night after practice as his team prepares to start the 2011 season September 2nd at home against rival Hoover.

OSW: Justin you committed early to Rice, right after Junior Day. What's been going on since then and are you still getting contact from coaches?

JC: Once I committed I really closed the book on recruiting. Rice is the place I want to be and I really look forward to everything about the school and being back in Houston. I still get mail and inquiries through my coach but I've made it clear to everyone I'm solid with my decision.

OSW: You lived here growing up and would have attended Clear Creek High School. Do you keep in touch with your old friends?

JC: Yeah I'm still in touch with Brent Wagner quite a bit. We came to the Rice Junior Day event together. Brent committed to Southeast Louisiana not too long ago. He moved to Center this year. He's a good friend and I'm happy he's getting a shot to play college ball too. I think if he were a little taller he'd be getting looks from a lot of the bigger schools - he's got some of the best highlight film I've seen!

OSW: You sound like his agent!

JC: Hahaha - no I just think he's got great feet and works hard. He's a good player seriously

OSW: So having been committed for a while now you've had plenty of time to think about Rice and what it might be like. What are you expecting when you get here?

JC: I think there will be lots of studying! (haha) As far as football goes I know I'll have to work hard to prepare. The Rice program has recruited really well. I can't wait to get there and put in the work to make it better. There are some great players coming in at Rice now and I'm excited to be a part of a building program.

OSW: How would describe yourself as a player?

JC: I definitely think I'm a physical player. I think that's how the game should be played. I love to lay a big hit on somebody. I love to hit - I always have since I was a little kid. I don't try to hurt anybody but football is about contact and there's a reason we wear pads. Football is really my favorite thing in the world. I don't have many other hobbies.

OSW: What Safety position will you play this year?

JC: We have such a good group of guys in the secondary this year so I'll be playing closer to the line of scrimmage - both Strong Safety and also Rover. Those spots are kind of interchangeable in our system. I'm really excited to play in the box; I'll get plenty of action and will hopefully get to do a lot of blitzing.

OSW: What do you expect from your team this year?

JC: I think we have a chance to be really good. The local paper projects us to go 13-2 and win state so I'd be pretty happy with that kind of year. We've got a lot of talent. People say we have the best Secondary in the state. Our offense will be good since they practice against us every day."

OSW: What do you expect from Rice this year?

JC: I'd love for the team to go to a bowl game - the Liberty Bowl would be awesome. That one would be a short trip for me>

We couldn't agree more on that one Justin.
