Lancaster LB could be next in line

With the transfer of class of 2011 signee E'Juan Price, a spot has opened up for a linebacker in Ohio State's 2012 class. On Thursday, the Buckeyes and head coach Luke Fickell identified the prospect that they would like to fill that void in Lancaster (Ohio) inside linebacker Luke Roberts. The 6-foot-2, 220-pound prospect got word of his offer after calling Fickell on Thursday afternoon.

"I was really excited," said Roberts. "It's obviously my biggest offer that I've got and it was a pretty exciting moment."

Should Roberts take the Buckeyes up on their offer, he wouldn't be the first linebacker out of Lancaster to suit up in the Scarlet and Gray. In fact, it was a former Lancaster product that informed Roberts that good news may be on the way.

"Bobby Carpenter is an alumni at my school and I know him pretty well," Roberts explained. "Coach (Luke) Fickell sent him a text earlier and told him to tell me to give him a call. Bobby called me and then I called coach Fickell and that's how I found out."

The offer comes on the heels of a strong performance at last Saturday's senior one-day camp where Roberts impressed Fickell while working out in the same group as current commit Josh Perry.

"They liked what I did at camp and he talked about how they're trying to recruit the right guys and he thought I was the right guy," he said.

Obviously the Ohio State staff was impressed with Roberts' performance on Saturday but what did Roberts think of his performance?

"I thought it was probably my best camp of the season," he said. "It was my fifth camp and it's nice to get them all over with and done but I had fun. I thought I performed pretty well (at Ohio State)."

The offer from Ohio State is the fourth BCS level scholarship offer that Roberts has obtained so far.

"I have offers from a few MAC schools and then Cincinnati, Purdue, Indiana, and Ohio State," he said. "Ohio State would be my favorite along with probably Purdue and Cincinnati."

With Ohio State at the top of the list, Roberts had nothing but glowing things to say about the program.

"I mean, they're Ohio State, there's a not a whole lot more you can say," he said. "They're going to be successful every year and they have a great tradition. Obviously, living only about 45 minutes away from the campus I hear a lot about them and everybody around here is a huge fan."

Roberts says a decision could be coming soon.

"I'm probably planning to make my decision within the next month or so," he said. "I'd like to get it out of the way before the season so I can focus more on my team."

When the time comes to make a decision, Roberts knows exactly what he will be looking for in a school and football program.

"Academics are really important to me," Roberts said. "I have a 30 on my ACT and a 4.3 GPA, so that's a major thing. I also want to be comfortable with the coaches and getting to know more about the football program and then also the commitment that the football program has to winning football games."
