Baylor Makes a Move

Baylor's coaching staff already knew about Arlington Bowie defensive end Jessie Rogers in 2009.

Word-of-mouth, coupled film review and evaluation made it pretty clear that the Bears were interested. Now, they weren't one of the first to offer Rogers. In fact, they didn't deliver their verbal offer until about mid-May.

However, it appears to be a good thing that they did. The Bears are one program the 6-4, 241-pound Rogers is seriously considering.

"Baylor's been following me for a long time,'' Rogers said. "When I went into this offeseason, I wasn't sure if they were still interested. But I started seeing them a lot more of them lately."

Rogers attended Baylor's June 12 camp on the university's campus along with teammate Demonte Hood as guests. Neither went through the workouts. He has drawn the attention of many solid BCS program including Arkansas, Oklahoma State and Kansas State. All three of those schools went to bowl games.

Baylor is currently evaluating several defensive end candidates. Rogers called his recent visit an unofficial because he toured the campus with his family. He said Baylor is in his top five schools.

He said he plans to return to Waco for the final "In the Trenches Camp" on July 22 because he said he was told that's where many of the older and more physical players will attend.

As a strongside defensive end, Rogers said he has been prone to rely on his swim move to get back either the tackle or the tight end. However, he spent the spring football season working on his rip move. He collected four sacks, but it's clear that he will be a marked player this fall.

The Volunteers have the talent to be considered one of the top 10-15 Class 5A teams in the state of Texas.

"The campus is real nice, and I was really impressed with their indoor practice facility and weight room,'' Rogers said. "That weight room was really impressive. I really like Baylor. I want to make my decision by the end of July.''
