Tech offers '13 linebacker

Missouri City (Texas) Fort Bend Marshall linebacker Deon Hollins Jr. is another 2013 athlete who was in attendance at a Texas Tech camp recently. Like some others, he's also since been offered by the Red Raiders.

"We've been in correspondence with Coach Chad Scott for quite some time and we've got a really good feel with him. Deon has been in contact with him too and they've built a great relationship," according to his father Deon Hollins Sr. "Tech came to a spring practice and they were there to check out Ryan Flannigan, but they noticed Deon who they thought was pretty special too. So they watched him practice and liked what they saw, and that's kind of how the relationship got going."

So far, it sounds like Tech has been able to establish a solid rapport with the 6-foot-2, 215-pounder.

"He really loves Coach Scott and the Tech staff. It was funny because he saw Coach Chad Glasgow at the camp really getting after some of the defensive backs. Deon has a coach at school that is really intense like Coach Glasgow and that got his attention. He liked that. He doesn't mind the intensity. He knows that it's the nature of the beast and that these guys want perfection out of their athletes," Mr. Hollins said. "The Texas Tech staff really had a great impression on him. I know that Tommy Tuberville is going to have this program headed in the right direction and I can see the foundation he's already building with his recruiting classes."

"Deon doesn't know a whole lot about Coach Tuberville and his program, but I remember him from Auburn. I know what kind of program he established there and I feel like he's definitely headed in that direction with Tech. It doesn't hurt that he came in and won 8 games without a recruiting class of his own. It just makes us think that Coach Tuberville's program is rising in a positive direction."

Hollins has never been to Lubbock, but his father indicated that they would be looking to make that happen "very soon."

The relationship Hollins has with a 2011 Tech signee, and a 2012 target, may assist the Red Raiders in their efforts.

"He talks to 'Dre (DeAndre Washington) and Ryan Flannigan quite a bit," Mr. Hollins said. "They've got a good relationship with one another and that might be something that could be a great connection down the road."

The offer from Tech was Hollins' first, while he's also been shown interest by Alabama, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Oregon, TCU, Texas, and Texas A&M.
