Logan preps for busy summer
One look at Brookline (Mass.) Dexter linebacker Abner Logan and it becomes a mystery why his biggest offer so far is from Florida International.
With a 3.0 GPA and a 6-foot-1, 222 pound frame, Logan may be one of the northeast's biggest sleepers. However, following an impressive showing at the State College Nike Football Training Camp, that may be about to change.
"I think I played really well, especially because I play other sports," said Logan. "I don't get to train for football year round like some of these guys, I just got done playing basketball and I lost a lot of weight, so I'm just now putting that back on, getting in the weight room and doing drills.
"I was proud of myself for the most part. I got beat in coverage sometimes, but so did everyone else. I think my performance was pretty solid."
One school that has already caught Logan's attention is Penn State. Before performing for the Nike scouts, Logan took in all the Nittany Lions had to offer, unofficially visiting the school the Friday before camp.
Although the coaching staff is yet to offer, Logan had an excellent visit, one that will keep Penn State in the hunt until the very end, if they decide to offer.
"I've never really been to a university of that caliber, so when I got there and took everything in, I was like, 'wow, this is impressive.' All their national championships and bowl games. The coaching staff and everyone associated with the program, they're really good people and you can tell that by just spending a few minutes with everyone.
"They strive for excellence, I was talking to the linebackers coach and coach Kavanaugh and I got a really good feel for them. They both think the same. It's football second, academics first. They're graduation rate is one of the highest in the country. There really is no other place where you can get such a historical football program and the best academics around. It's a very special place."
With three verbals so far, it appears that Logan is going to have to earn his scholarship during a school's individual camp this summer.
"I have an offer from UMass, Florida International and Towson University. Duke has to come up and see me and so does Virginia. I have a lot of schools that want me to come there, I actually have a full schedule of schools I'm going to camp at, all of them in June."
So where is Logan headed?
"I'm going to the UConn camp, Penn State, N.C. State, Florida, Notre Dame, Nebraska, Northwestern, Syracuse and Maryland" said Logan. "There is may be a few more I can't think of, I have a whole schedule of schools, all of them in the month of June."
Logan is actually being recruited as a running back for some schools, but the majority, including Penn State, see him as a linebacker at the next level.
