Coates goes two for two at elite camps

After winning MVP awards at both the State College Nike Football Training Camp and the Camp in Richmond, Pomfret (Md.) McDonough defensive back Marchez Coates proved to scouts that he can compete with the northeast's top Division I talent. Just don't tell Coates that.

A standout at North Point during his sophomore and junior season, Coates just recently made the move to McDonough, where he plans on "shutting down more five-stars."

"I just love competing," said Coates. "I know I can compete with these guys, I've been doing it all my life. I want to show people that I'm a five-star player and I can compete with five-star players. I can play with people like Stefon Diggs. Me and him went at it one time, I shut him down, then he got me, then I shut him down again and he got me. So I know I can play with five-star players. I just want to show my talent and compete."

Coates is yet to pull in his first verbal offer, but he feels like it may be close. As of now, Boston College, Maryland, Pitt, Rutgers, TCU, Tennessee, and Virginia are just some of the schools showing interest, along with Penn State.

"Penn State stopped by school today, it was coach Johnson" Coates said on Tuesday evening. "I said hi, but he can't say too much. I'm not sure exactly where I stand right now, but I'm pretty sure they're close to offering. I should be getting an offer soon. My coach just told me that coach Johnson said I'm 'highly recruitable,' so that's nice. Hopefully I get an offer from them soon."

The State College Nike Football Training Camp was Coates' second visit to State College this month. The 5-foot-11, 173-pound prospect checked out the Nittany Lions spring game on April 16.

"I watched the spring game, it was great. I love how all the players are signing autographs before the game in their little fan zone. That was cool, the fans were having fun and the players looked like they were enjoying it to. I really like the fan base though, they're great there."

As for who else may offer, Coates feels good about two schools in particular.

"I know Pitt is coming to visit my school this week, I believe," said Coates. "I pretty sure Virginia is coming by as well, but my coach knows all that stuff, I'm not exactly sure. I feel good about both schools though, them and Penn State have been talking to me the most, trying to set up a relationship."

Coates plans on attending Miami's spring camp in late-May. Other schools that he will most likely camp at are Penn State, Pittsburgh, Syracuse and Tennessee.
