O'Connor has great visit to State

Yesterday quarterback Tyler O'Connor of Lima Catholic High School visited Michigan State University. The 6-foot-3, 205-pound signal-caller is one of the top players on the recruiting board for Head Coach Mark Dantonio and his staff. SpartanMag.com was able to catch up with him shortly afterwards and get his thoughts on his time in East Lansing.

O'Connor has been to Michigan State before, but this was the first time he was able to see the team in action at practice and spend extensive time talking with some of the players about the school and program. SpartanMag.com asked O'Connor about his thoughts on the visit.

"It went great! I got to spend time with some of the players and went out to eat. I also got some one on one time with Coach Dantonio. We were both very straight-up about everything and it was great to get on the same page. Overall it was a great visit."

Michigan State is not the only BCS program in hot pursuit of O'Connor. In addition to Michigan State, teams such as West Virginia, Northwestern, Virginia, Louisville and Vanderbilt have all extended him a scholarship. In addition, several teams who lost out in the Zeke Pike sweepstakes (committed to Auburn) are now looking to get involved with O'Connor.

Michigan State currently only has 2 quarterbacks on scholarship, Kirk Cousins and Andrew Maxwell. 2011 signee Connor Cook will make 3, but the team will be back down to 2 once Cousins graduates. For that reason it is imperative the Spartans sign a top notch quarterback in this class. We asked O'Connor if he was able to speak with Cousins or Maxwell.

Yes, I was able to speak with Kirk several times and I went out to lunch with Andrew," O'Connor said.

O'Connor went on to inform us that the Spartans are "very high" on his list. The visit only served to improve Michigan States chances with him. Head Coach Mark Dantonio wants players to learn as much about the program as possible before they commit. He is confident in what the school and the program have to offer. O'Connor is doing his due diligence in the recruiting process and the staff fully understands and appreciates that.

The Spartan staff will be stopping into Lima Catholic High School in the month of May and you can be sure the staff will be looking forward to the next time O'Connor is on campus.

SparatanMag.com's Take:

Last year Connor Cooke informed me that he committed to MSU on his 7thy visit to East Lansing. It was at that time where he felt completely at home and making the decision was very easy. The staff certainly wants O'Connor to feel the same way.

It should be interesting to see what other teams offer O'Connor during May. You can be sure that some o the teams that had O'Connor lower on their board will now be offering due to missing out on Pike. Kudos to the Spartan staff for identifying and prioritizing O'Connor early on in the process. Michigan State does an excellent job of early evaluation and O'Connor is another example of that.

Quarterback Chad Kelly of New York will be visiting Michigan State this weekend. Like O'Connor, Kelly has a Spartans offer, he also has been to Michigan State before and has positive feelings about the program. It will be interesting to see where he rates the Green and White following his time on campus.
