Recruiting Wrap: Offers and Commits

Several players that Michigan State is actively recruiting made commitments this past weekend, while several other targets picked up new scholarship offers. SpartanMag.com breaks it down.

Off the board:

  • RB: Vonte Jackson of Kenosha Bradford High School Wisconsin

The dynamic RB committed to the Badgers this weekend. The decision is not a big surprise, though it does seem a bit odd considering the log-jam of talent the Badgers have at RVB. Jackson only got about 1/3 of the carries last year for Bradford due to his teammate and 2011 Badger commitment CCCC. Throw in the fact that James White was sonly a freshman and you have a crowded situation. Michigan State would have loved to have added a player of Jackson's ability considering they did not sign a RB for the class of 2011.

  • OL Ben Braden of Rockford High School in Michigan

Braden committed to the University of Michigan late last week. Based on BCS scholarship offers, Braden looks to be the top offensive line prospect in Michigan for the class of 2012. Like it or not this will go down as the first official UM/MSU battle for an in-state recruit as both teams offered. Coach Hoke is desperate to add some quality size and the word is the Wolverines want to take 6 OL this year. Michigan State will be very selective and the number will be 2 or 3 at the max. The key for MSU will be to land players higher on their board than Braden.

  • DE Brent Wilkerson of DeMatha High School in Maryland.

Michigan State was able to ring the bell at DeMatha last year and is hoping to do the same again this year. Wilkerson was one of the players they coveted and offered early in the process. Unfortunately for the Spartans, Wilkerson grew up a big Penn State fan and opted to end his recruitment this weekend while visiting State College. The state of Pennsylvania is loaded this year so the Spartans may have to go into the Lion's backyard if they are going to dip into Maryland.

    Close to popping?

Below are a few prospects that could make a commitment in the near future:

  • TE JP Holtz of XXX High School in Pennsylvania

Holtz has been offered by both Michigan State and Penn State. The PA native was in State College this weekend and he could be closing in on making his choice. Penn State has offered 3 tight ends, but they probably cannot take all of them. It may be a situation of first come, first serve

  • TE Ron Thompson of East Detroit High School

Thompson has seen his stock steadily rise this spring and Michigan State is taking a close look at the 6-foot-4, 210-pound prospect. The University of Michigan has offered and Thompson was in Ann Arbor this past weekend. The inside word is the Thompson is close to making a decision and the Wolverines are the leader of the pack.

    Jim Tressel Fall-out?

Many have wondered if the Jim Tressel situation will impact Ohio State recruiting. The reality is the Ohio State is one of those schools that would have to have an implosion to not recruit well. Many kids from Ohio would still commit to Ohio State even if Tressel was fired and Rich Rodriguez was hired. Kids may take a wait and see approach, but Ohio State is going to get the pick of the litter in-state no matter who is at the helm or what is going on.

    Warner to wear a path?

Coach Dave Warner is recruiting Eastern Pennsylvania and Indiana for Michigan State. Those areas have plenty of talenetd prospects, but two schools stand out in particular, Archbishop Wood High School and Warreen Central High School.

Archbishop Wood High Schools of Pennsylvania: They have 5 players that alreay have D1 offers. Michigan State has already offered OL Frank Taylor and TE Colin Thompson form there.

Warren Central High School of Indiana: They have 8 players that already have a D1 scholarship offer. Michigan State has already offered DT Sheldon Byrd and is looking seriously at 3 or 4 other prospects.

Together those schools have 13 players that already have an offer. No doubt Coach Warner will be a familar figure at both schools whenever he is allowed to stop in.

    New Offers for Spartan targets:

Several Spartan targets recently picked up new scholarship offers. Below is a rundown of the players and the offer.

  • DT Jaleel Johnson of Montini Catholic High School, Illinois: Offered by the Iowa Hawkeyes

  • QB Tyler O'Connor of Lima Catholic High School, Ohio: Offered by the Louisville Cardinal
