Simmons gets Oregon offer
The west coast class of 2012 is loaded with high quality offensive linemen. One of the best of the group is Encino offensive tackle Jordan Simmons. Simmons has offers to top schools across the country, and the Oregon Ducks added their name to the list this month.
Duck Sports Authority caught up with the Rivals250 Watch List member and got the story on how the Oregon offer came about.
"A couple weeks ago at lunch my coach came in and said 'Hey Jordan, Oregon offered you,'" began Simmons. "I really didn't believe him. I thought he was joking around, but he wasn't. He said 'Coach Kelly wants you to call him when you can'. I tried to give Coach Kelly a call but couldn't get hold of him because it was the weekend. I called him on next Tuesday because of the holiday and told him who I was. He said 'the coaches have sat down and discussed it and we would like to officially offer you a scholarship to Oregon.' He said they liked that I was quick for a big man."
Despite dozens of scholarship offers, he did not take the offer from Chip Kelly lightly. "I was very excited because Oregon is one of my favorite schools for college. I was just excited because I thought they wanted to see me lose some weight before they offered but then it just happened."
DSA asked Simmons what he thinks the strength of his OL game is. "My punch is good," he replied.
Despite his 6-foot-5, 333 pound frame, the Crespi high school standout likes the speed at which the Ducks play. "They play at that high-tempo offense. I love how they play the high tempo. They are good at running and I like that too."
