Tech one of many after 2012 offensive tackle

Edna (Texas) offensive tackle Mac Long has been hearing from programs early in his recruitment, but no one has yet to take the lead for his services.

"I've been hearing from programs all over the place really," Long said. "I've been hearing from Texas Tech, Texas A&M, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Alabama, Baylor, TCU, and Arizona. I know there are a few more I'm probably forgetting, but it's really been coming from all directions so far. All of them are on equal ground right now, though. I'm as wide open as I could possibly be."

The 6-foot-4, 277-pounder picked up an offer from Tech not too long ago, and the leader of the charge has been assistant coach Chad Scott.

"I've been in contact with Coach Scott and we've developed a pretty good relationship. I've been hearing from Tech for a while now," he said. "Coach Scott seems like a down-to-earth kind of guy, and he's really easy to talk to about anything. I've liked talking to him when I've had the chance."

Long attended Texas A&M's junior day a couple of weeks ago, but has no plans to attend any others at this point. He said that he'd like to have a decision out of the way prior to his senior season, but that's not set in stone.

With attention coming from several different areas of the country, there's a good chance the 2012 prospect could end up a sizeable distance away from home.

"That doesn't matter to me. Distance isn't really that huge of a deal. I think I'd like to keep playing football in Texas, but overall I just want to find a good home that will give me a chance to succeed."

"I'm looking for a small-town feel, since I'm definitely from one," he said. "I want to know that I'm part of a family, and hopefully it's one that is embraced by the community. I want coaches that will be straight up with me and be concerned about my development as more than just a football player. If I can find those two things at a place where the academics will allow me to get a degree I can be proud of, then that's where I'd say I'll be. I'm looking forward to figuring that out over the next few months."

Long currently holds offers from Houston and Texas Tech, while he's seen interest from Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, Baylor, Nebraska, Rice, SMU, TCU, Texas, Texas A&M, and Virginia.
