October 29, 2009 Football can be a brutal sport. Those that play, follow and cover the sport at the high school level in Colorado were reminded of that earlier this month. In Columbine's rivalry game against Bear Creek, on October 15th, Danny Spond suffered a concussion so severe that he was unconscious for about two hours. Fortunately, there was no bleeding and the CU bound quarterback is expected to make a full recovery. "All the CAT scans and MRIs came back great," explained his father, Don Spond. "He just can't do any contact sports for a while, anywhere from six to eight weeks, so pretty much the season is over for him. "But we are just glad to have our son back. It was pretty scary for us." Spond is still suffering from headaches. But that is to be expected, according to his doctors. "He went back to school on Monday and put in three classes and that is pretty much all he could take," his dad said. "And then he went to the afternoon classes today (Tuesday). He is just going to be alternating those for a while. "He is in AP Calculus and Physics and Economics, not easy classes, they are the kind of classes that you are really going to have to concentrate on. But his teachers have been great working with him and he seems to be on track." Spond was putting together a great senior campaign before he suffered the injury. Through the first six games of the season, he had accounted for 883 yards and 14 touchdowns while helping the Rebels to five wins. He was completing 68 percent of his passes. "Every game that he played, you could see him getting a little bit better," Spond's father said. "The confidence that he portrayed, playing both sides of the ball, kicking, punting, he did it all. I would talk to after the games and I would ask him if he is tired and he would say, 'Yeah, I'm exhausted, but I am in the best shape of my life'. And he said, 'I have never had so much fun playing football'. ? One of the hardest things for him to accept right now is that he can't play the game that he loves. "Everyone is just telling him to be patient. There is more to life right now than football. There is his future to consider and making a full recovery is the most important thing right now." Spond, a Rivals.com four-star prospect, became the first member of Buffaloes' 2010 recruiting class when he verbally committed to CU head coach Dan Hawkins and his staff back on April 16th. "Coach Hawkins gave him a call recently and told him, 'Hey, we are thinking about you, hope you get better. We can't wait to have you up here'," his father said. "A couple of their other coaches also called and sent him letters. [Former Denver Broncos star] John Lynch called him a couple days later. So that has been great." In Spond's absence, Columbine defeated a struggling Westminster team, 44-6, last Thursday. The Rebels will play third-ranked Pomona in their regular season finale this week. Junior Aaron Torres has stepped in as Spond's replacement at quarterback. ![]() |
