Despite the cloud of uncertainty over the Ohio State football program, the Buckeyes may still be closing in on their eighth commitment for the 2012 class. A few days ago Bedford (Ohio) defensive back Tyvis Powell had set an announcement date for Wednesday June 2nd at his high school. Even with the recent news of head coach Jim Tressel stepping down, Powell says he still plans on making his decision public this week.
"I'm still making my announcement on Wednesday," he said. "Ohio State is still in the running."
Just a week after receiving his offer from Ohio State, the news of Tressel's resignation definitely caught Powell off guard. Still, Powell says the news won't impact his decision making process.
"I was shocked," said Powell of the news. "It is very unfortunate for coach Tressel but it doesn't affect my decision at all."
With Powell being one of the newest offers, there may not have been as much history between him and Tressel as with some of the other recruits but he still has a great deal of respect and admiration for Tressel as a coach and person.
"He's a great man and he's done great things for that university," Powell said. "I think he's a great character guy, a likeable guy. He's a great guy and a great coach."
Powell's decision will come down to three programs.
"I will be deciding between West Virginia, Ohio State, and Michigan State," he said.
