Buffs' staff makes a good impression
Ask any Colorado men's basketball fan why the program has emerged as one of the west coast's best, and they'll surely point to head coach Tad Boyle, associate head coach Jean Prioleau, assistant coach Mike Rohn and assistant coach Rodney Billups.
This quartet, which formerly included now Loyola Marymount assistant coach Tom Abatemarco, has churned out 69 wins over the last three years, the best such stretch in program history.
So, what has been the secret to their success?
Ask many around the college basketball world and they will tell you that recruiting is the lifeblood of any program. Yes, once those players are on campus, coaches need to orchestrate team chemistry, schemes and personality variances. But nothing trumps recruiting.
When Boyle and company walked into Boulder, there wasn't an established connection between Colorado and anyone specific region. Sure, this staff had connections, but it wasn't like the Buffs were a household name in southern California or Texas.
That has changed in just three years as top prospects from all around the west coast, and Texas, see Colorado as viable option.
