Donatell signs with Deacs
Highlands Ranch (Colo.) dual-threat quarterback Steve Donatell signed with Wake Forest at 10:21 AM today, Feb. 1.
Rivals.com rates the 6-foot-5, 195-pound, Donatell as a three-star recruit, the nation's No. 19 dual-threat quarterback and the No. 10 overall prospect in Colorado.
He committed to Wake Forest Jan. 24. Steve Russ recruited Donatell for the Demon Deacons.
Russ played on Denver's Super Bowl-winning teams in 1998 and 1999 when Donatell's father Ed Donatell was an assistant coach for the Broncos, so the connection has proved to beneficial for the Demon Deacons in their pursuit for the Colorado athlete. Wake can only hope the Russ factor will continue to be advantageous as Donatell moves closer to making a final decision.
"They've [Wake Forest] already been at the top of my list with their strong academics and good culture there," Donatell said in a prior interview with Deacons Illustrated. "They've showed major improvements this year. They just look like a team on the rise."
Donatell was recruited as an athlete by the Demon Deacons. He will begin his college career as an outside linebacker, but he may switch to tight end, quarterback, wide receiver or strong safety depending on how he devolops and team needs.
He completed 114 of 181 passes for 1,686 yards and 23 touchdowns, and was intercepted just three times. Donatell also carried 120 times for 625 yards and seven touchdowns. Highlands Ranch finished 9-3, losing to eventual state champion Columbine 35-14 in the quarter finals of the state playoffs.
