Sheffield getting close
After committing to Arizona State this fall, Jake Sheffield has been weighing his options once the Sun Devils coaching staff was let go following the 2011 season. His primary option appears to be attending the University of Iowa, where he visited earlier this month. Now the junior college prospect is nearing his decision and it appears that the Hawkeyes have a very good shot at landing him.
"I'm probably going to decide in the next few days between Iowa and Arizona State," Sheffield said Sunday evening.
It appears that the Hawkeyes have a leg up on the competition with the Iowa coaches still in regular contact with Sheffield and the Sun Devils new head coach has not made contact with their soft verbal commit.
"I haven't spoken to the new coaches at Arizona State yet," he said. "I think they tried to call me the other day on my cell phone, but I didn't get a chance to talk to them."
Meanwhile, Iowa made their sales pitch earlier this month on his official visit and the 6-foot-4 and 280 pound defensive lineman from College of the Desert in Palm Desert, CA came away impressed.
"I really enjoyed the campus and the people that I met on my Iowa visit. The coaches were great and I was really impressed by the way they ran their football program. The players were really helpful in telling me what the program is like from their perspective and I felt like I fit in very well with their style of defense."
Sheffield will be eligible to transfer to a four year school for the spring semester, so he would be able to participate in spring drills. The Iowa coaches have made it clear during his recruitment that he will have an opportunity if he comes to Iowa City.
"I sat down with Coach Norm Parker and he said I would be crazy not to come to Iowa," Sheffield said. "He said they are graduating three or four guys on the defensive line and if I came in and worked hard that I would have a chance to play right away."
Junior College prospects can begin signing letters of on Wednesday, December 21st.
