Ohio athlete is on the rise
At 6-foot-4 and 185-pounds, Tyvis Powell looks more like a wide receiver than a cornerback.
That's one of the reasons coaches believe he's such an intriguing prospect.
Powell has the size and length to match up with bigger wide receivers and colleges are telling him he can either play corner or safety at the next level. While it's not clear which position he'll be playing in the defensive backfield, Powell prefers corner.
With offers from West Virginia, Minnesota, Akron, Ball State, Buffalo, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan, among others, Powell is an emerging prospect that's worth keeping an eye on.
Recently he said West Virginia was at the top of his list.
"I just really like their program," Powell said of the Mountaineers on Tuesday.
"I like their coaching staff and I like the defensive set they run."
Powell attended the Mountaineers' spring game and came away impressed with everything he saw.
He has also visited Ohio State, Wisconsin, West Virginia and several schools in the Mid-American Conference. Expect him to camp at some schools this summer to try to continue to help his own cause.
Are there any schools behind WVU that have a chance to make a push?
"Actually, Duke could," he said. "Coach (Matt) Luke came to my school and I really like what they've had to say."
Last fall Powell recorded 65 tackles while picking off four passes.
