Houston commit Herman is a big one
The Houston Cougars got their 2012 recruiting campaign off to a big start....literally. They brought in a select group of guys on Saturday before the team held their first official workout of the spring and came away with Needville offensive tackle Blake Herman who became the first official commitment for the class.
A little later Eisenhower defensive end Gregory Jackson joined the fray becoming the Cougars' second commitment for the class, but Herman will always be known now as the first to pull the trigger and give his verbal pledge to head coach Kevin Sumlin and staff.
Herman made his first trip to Cullen Boulevard on Saturday for the junior day and the massive tackle liked what he saw.
"That was my first trip up to the campus," said the 6-foot-8, 285 pound offensive lineman. "It was a nice place, I liked the campus and all the nice facilities. They are good people up there and they treated me like family."
Herman pointed out a few things about the campus tour, but one spot in particular stood out to the newest pledge.
"I liked that weight room," said the Needville junior. "It's a good place, I'll be spending a lot of time in there. It will be like my home."
One couple things stood out to Herman early on that made him comfortable making his decision this early.
"With recruiting so far Houston has been the school that has been on me from day one," he said. "I have had a few calls and some coaches have come by the school, but Houston has been there from the start. I love that it is so close to home too. It will be nice to get to play in front of my family."
Despite it still being early in the process, Herman is glad to have his decision made.
"It feels good to get out of the way," he said. "It relieves a lot of stress and pressure so I can just focus now."
Herman is not just a standout for Needville on the gridiron as he also plays basketball for the Bluejays as well as track and field where he throws the discus and shot put. Herman was a first team selection to the 29-3A all district team this year.
Herman plans on attending some camps over the summer including at least one with the Cougars.
